Tritons Fall to Greyhounds on Thursday

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team dropped a nail bitter to Indianapolis 65-63 on Thursday evening at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons drop to 9-16, 7-12 GLVC while the Greyhounds move to 16-11, 12-7 GLVC.

Despite the loss, UMSL remained seventh in the latest edition of the GLVC Points Rating System with a 2.84 PRS and has a 0.02 lead over McKendree who's in eighth while Quincy sits in ninth with a 2.79 PRS. The top eight teams in the final point rating system advance to next weekend's GLVC Tournament at Hyland Arena on Lindenwood's campus in St. Charles, Mo.

The Tritons scored the first five points of the contest and led by as many as seven in the opening stanza before UIndy cut the lead to three by the end of the quarter.

The second frame went back-and-forth for the first five minutes before UMSL finished the half on an 11-3 run to take a 10-point lead into the locker room at the break. Morgan Ramthun had five points in that run while Jalysa Stokes added four and Kiara Stewart had two. The Tritons shot 47 percent in the stanza while holding UIndy to just 33 percent shooting.

UMSL took its largest lead of the game on its first possession after the half as Ramthun got a steal and Stewart hit a layup to extend the lead to 12 just 0:33 in. The Greyhounds chipped away at the lead thanks to a 14-6 run over the next 4:30 getting to within 42-38 after a three-pointer from Idalis Ortiz just past the halfway mark of the frame.

UMSL pushed its lead back to seven with 3:39 to go in the quarter on a jumper by Stokes but UIndy scored nine of the final 12 points of the frame to cut the Triton lead to 49-48 heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Hounds took their first lead of the contest on their first possession of the final session as Liv Becker scored off an offense rebound. UMSL regained the lead after two Stokes free throws but that would be its last lead of the contest.

UIndy scored eight of the next nine points to build its biggest lead of the contest on a layup by Becker with 3:51 left. The Tritons had a chance to tie the game during that run but missed two free throws.

UMSL got to within two with 0:12 remaining after a pair of free throws from Tori Standifer but never got the ball back as the Hounds were able to dribble out the clock.

The Tritons were held to 37 percent (23-for-62) shooting from the field in the contest including 4-of-11 from three but shot only 68 percent at the foul line. Stokes led all scorers with 18 points and was one of four UMSL players to reach double figures in scoring. Amaya Blake had 15 points, Ramthun finished with 11 points and Stewart added 10 points.

The Greyhounds shot slightly better connecting on 40 percent (20-for-50) from the floor, were 7-of-24 from three and shot 82 percent at the foul line. Ortiz led UIndy with 16 points off the bench while Elana Wells had 12 points and Lauren With finished with 10 points.

The Tritons host McKendree in their regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building. The team will honor Stewart and Shania Liburd with senior day festivities prior to the start of the game.
