ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team dropped the final game of its four-game series with Minnesota Crookston 8-2 on Sunday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field. The Tritons drop to 4-8 while the Golden Eagles improve to 3-5.
UMSL got on the board first as it manufactured a run in the second inning.
Leighton Keller reached first on a wild pitch after striking out to start the inning. He stole second, advanced to third on a groundout to second from
Justin Simard and scored on
Carson Holin's groundout to first.
UMC took the lead in the fourth on Ben Gellz's two out, two-run double down the left field line that scored Mike Hallquist and Josh Dykhoff.
The Tritons tied the game in the seventh.
Brandon Olion double down the right field with one out, stole third and scored on a throwing error by Hallquist on a squeeze bunt from Simard. Simard wound up at second on the play but was later picked off to end the inning.
The Golden Eagles regained the lead in the ninth sending 11 batters to the plate scoring six runs on six hits. Gellz started the inning with a single up the middle, stole second and went to third on Sawyer Satrum's base hit to right. Christian Norby was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Brady Krile walked Mitch Goodwin on four pitches to force in the go-ahead run.
Trent Anderson came on relief of Krile and struck out Teddy Giefer for the first out of the inning. Matt Nunn drove in a run with a single to left to make it 4-2. Hallquist doubled to deep center driving in Norby and Goodwin. Dykhoff singled on a soft roller to second which allowed Nunn to score. Jake Hjelle added the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Tritons were held to just three hits in the contest with Olion, Keller and
Bryce Kulinski tallying one each.
Nick Torres turned in a solid outing on the mound allowing two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in seven innings of work. Krile took the loss allowing four runs on three hits and a walk in an inning-plus to drop to 0-2 on the season.
UMSL continues its eight-game homestand this Friday (March 3) as it takes on Winona State in the first of a four-game series at the UMSL Baseball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
