ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team opened its four-game series against Winona State sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo. The Tritons improve to 6-8 while the Warriors drop to 0-6.
Game 1 – UMSL 13 Winona State 3 7 innings
UMSL jumped out to the early lead with a run in the second inning. With one out,
Carson Holin doubled to right, stole third and scored on an error by the third baseman.
Winona tied the game with a run in the third inning. With two out, Dane Weiland doubled to left and scored on Cooper Kapanke's single to right.
The Tritons retook the lead in their half of the third with two runs on three hits.
Logan Mantz led off the inning with a single to left and advanced to second on
Braedon Stoakes bunt single.
Kameron Laskowski walked to load the bases with no out.
Brandon Olion drove in Mantz and Stoakes with a single to center.
The Warriors tied the game in the fourth. Austin Beyer led off the inning with a walk, stole second and scored on Josh Gullickson's single to center.
The Tritons added to their lead with a pair of runs in the sixth.
Mitchell Green drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Holin. Mantz scored later in the inning on Stoakes triple.
WSU got a run back in the sixth as Nick Herbst scored on a double play groundout.
UMSL put the game away in the seventh scoring eight runs on six hits. Green drove in the first run of the inning with a single to right. Mantz drove in
Justin Simard with bases loaded walk, Stoakes was hit by a pitch to bring in
Andrew Buescher for the third run of the inning. Laskowski walked with the bases loaded to make it 9-3. Olion drove in two more with a single to right,
Leighton Keller drove in Laskowski with a single to center and
Justin Simard capped the inning with a walk-off single to left scoring Olion.
The Tritons outhit the Warriors 15-8 in the contest and were led by Stoakes and Olion with three hits apiece. Keller and Simard had two hits each.
Ryan Berry picked up the win to even his record at 1-1. He allowed two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Game 2 – UMSL 10 Winona State 5
UMSL sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first scoring eight runs on nine hits and an error. Holin drove in the first run with a triple high off the fence in right to score Stoakes. Holin scored on the play as the first baseman's throw got away from the catcher. With one out, Keller doubled to left center and scored on Simard's single to right center. Buescher drove in two runs with a double to left center to make it 5-0. Green followed with a double to right center to bring in Buescher. Stoakes brought home Green with a single to center and then Olion drove in the final run of the frame with a single.
The Warriors got on the board with a run in the fourth, added two more in the fifth to cut the Triton lead to 8-3.
UMSL added a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to left that scored Simard.
Winona added two more in the sixth to get within 9-5 and had a chance to draw closer but left two runners on base to end the inning.
The Tritons added an insurance run in the sixth as
Bryce Kulinski walked with the bases loaded driving in Olion.
The Warriors loaded the bases with one out in the seventh but
Dylan Wobbe came on to get the final two outs to pick up his first save of the season.
UMSL had 11 hits in the nightcap and was led by Stoakes, Holin and Olion with two hits apiece.
Jacob Arndt evened his record at 1-1 allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings pitched.
The two teams conclude their four-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
