ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's tennis team won six of its nine matches in its 5-2 win over Purdue Northwest on Sunday at the Park Forest Tennis Club in Park Forest, Ill. The Tritons improve to 2-1 on the year while the Pride drops to 1-1.
UMSL won two of the three doubles matches to take the opening point. The tandem of
Jose Mayorga and
Joshua Mackey beat Luis Alvear and Luca Kirchoff 7-6 at number one doubles. PNW evened the doubles portion of the match as its team of Samuel Dickson and Joao Martins beat
Juan Vigil and
Raphael Kerndl 6-2 in the second doubles matches. The Tritons clinched the doubles point as
Gavin Sohn and
Tanin Ramnath defeated Levent Evyapan and Paul Hawes 6-4 at number three doubles.
On the singles side, Mayorga knocked off Kirchoff 6-4, 6-1 in the first singles contest. Vigil lost to Dickson 7-5, 0-6, 0-6 at number two singles. Kerndl fell to Martins in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 1-6. Mackey beat Evyapan 6-4, 7-6, Ramnath knocked off Alvear 6-2, 6-1 and Sohn rallied to beat Hawes 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 in the final singles match.
UMSL is back in action on Friday (Feb. 24) as it travels to Evansville, Ind., to take on Southern Indiana at 12 p.m. at the Evansville Tennis Center.
