ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team won both of its games on Friday to extend its win streak to three at The Spring Games at Legends Way Complex in Clermont, Fla. The Tritons (10-8) defeated Ashland 10-2 in five innings in their first game of the day and rallied for a 7-2 win over Holy Family University in the nightcap.
Game 1 – UMSL 10 Ashland 2 five innings
Ashland (3-14) jumped out to the early lead with a run on two hits and an error in the top of the third. Kaitlyn Carney drove in Josie Duncan with a single down the right field line.
UMSL rallied with three runs on four hits in the fourth.
Megan Brown led off the inning with double to center. With one out and the bases loaded
Annie Scaramuzzi walked to drive in Brown with the tying run.
Maddie Snemis reached on an infield single to plate
Riley Schultz with the go-ahead run.
Irene Travis drove in the final run of the frame with a single to left center to bring in
Anna VanGundy.
The Eagles got a run back in the fifth. Hailey Struckman doubled to left driving in Maddy Burdette.
The Tritons sealed the run-rule victory scoring seven runs on seven hits in their half of the fifth. Scaramuzzi and
McKenzie Lamos each drove in two in the frame while Snemis, Travis and
Courtney Settles drove in a run each.
UMSL outhit Ashland 14-5 in the contest and was led by Lamos with three hits while Travis, Settles, Schultz and Snemis had two hits apiece. Scaramuzzi picked up the win allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with two strikeouts in five innings pitched to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Game 2 – UMSL 7 Holy Family 2
The Tritons took the early lead with a run in the second. Back-to-back singles by Scaramuzzi and Schultz with one out in the inning started the rally. VanGundy advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher. Daley singled through the left side of the infield to bring in Scaramuzzi with the first run.
The Tigers (1-12) answered with two runs in their half of the second to take the lead. Makenna Patterson drove in the first run with a double to left center to tie the game. Madison Grubb walked with the bases loaded to give Holy Family the lead.
UMSL broke through against Patterson and the Tigers scoring five runs on six hits in the sixth. With two out and runners on first and second, Daley singled to right to drive in
Jamie Widule with the tying run. Snemis reached on an infield single to load the bases for Travis. Travis cleared the bases with a triple to right center to give the Tritons a 5-2 lead. Lamos capped the scoring in the inning with a single to right to bring home Travis.
UMSL extended its lead in the seventh as
Megan Brown led off the inning with a home run to left.
The Tritons finished with 12 hits in the contest and were led by Scaramuzzi with three while Travis and Daley had two hits apiece.
Mimi Bradley picked up her second straight win allowing two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and six walks to move to 2-0 on the season.
UMSL is back in action on Saturday morning taking on Northwood at 9 a.m. (CST) and Saginaw Valley at 11:30 a.m. (CST) Both games will be played at the Sleepy Hollow Complex in Leesburg, Fla.
