ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team had its three-game winning streak snapped with a pair of losses on Saturday at The Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla. The Tritons dropped their opener to Northwood 8-1 and lost their second game to Saginaw Valley State 3-0.
Game 1 – Northwood 8 UMSL 1
The Timberwolves (13-9) took the early lead with a run in the second. With one out, Ashlyn Lundquist doubled to right center, advanced to third on Madison Jordan's single to left and scored on Gabby Schloop's two-out single down the left field line.
Northwood sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning scoring six runs on three hits and a pair of walks. Haley Frank broke it open with a two-run triple to right center to extend the lead to 7-0.
UMSL (10-10) scored its lone run of the game in the sixth.
McKenzie Lamos led off the inning with a triple to right and scored on
Megan Brown's single to right.
The Timberwolves scored their final run in the seventh on Gianna Fantin's double to right center that drove in Lundquist.
The Tritons were held to four hits in the contest with Lamos, Brown,
Irene Travis and
Maddie Snemis recording a hit apiece.
Ashley Borowitz took the loss allowing five runs on three hits with four walks and a strikeout in 2.2 innings pitched to fall to 2-3 on the season.
Game 2 – Saginaw Valley 3 UMSL 0
The Cardinals (15-3) broke on top with a run in the bottom of the first. Jackie Popko led off the inning with a single, stole second and third and scored on Katelyn Pnacek's two-out single through the left side of the infield.
SVSU added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on three hits. Cam Coonan led off the inning with a double to left center and was run for by Olivia Sabin. Sabin went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Maddie Campagna's single to center. Later in the inning Sarah Gersch hit a sacrifice fly in foul territory down the right field line to drive in Campagna.
UMSL's bats were held in check by Alyssa Muench as she allowed just two hits and struck out two to pick up the complete game shutout and improve to 6-1.
Lamos and Snemis had a hit apiece to lead the Tritons.
Jenna Towle took the loss allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts against three walks in five innings pitched to drop to 3-2.
UMSL returns to the diamond on Monday morning taking on Purdue Northwest at 8 a.m. (CDT) and Franklin Pierce at 10:30 a.m. (CDT). Both games will be played at the Sleepy Hollow Complex in Leesburg, Fla.
