Tritons Hit Five Home Runs In Doubleheader Sweep of Quincy

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team hit five home runs in its doubleheader sweep of Quincy on Monday afternoon at the UMSL Softball Field. The Tritons won the first game 6-1 and the nightcap 8-2. UMSL has won a season-high six straight.

Game 1 – UMSL 6 Quincy 1
The Tritons (16-10, 2-0 GLVC) scored a pair of unearned runs in the home half of the first in game one. With one out, Courtney Settles singled to center and advanced to third on Corinne Daley's double to left center. After a groundout, Megan Brown reached on an error by the shortstop allowing Settles and Daley to score.

UMSL added four runs in the fourth on four hits. Brown led off the inning with a single to left and scored on Annie Scaramuzzi's double to left center. With one out, Jamie Widule singled to short to put runners on the corner. Maddie Snemis drove in Scaramuzzi with a fielder's choice to short as Widule was out at second on the play. With two away, McKenzie Lamos homered to center to drive in Snemis to make it 6-0.

Quincy (10-12, 2-2 GLVC) got on the board in the seventh courtesy of Jayle Jennings home run to left.

The Tritons had 10 hits in the opener and were led by Lamos, Scaramuzzi and Widule with two apiece. Ashley Borowitz picked up the complete game win giving up one run one three hits while striking out eight to improve to 5-3 on the season.

Game 2 – UMSL 8 Quincy 2
UMSL scored in three of the first four innings in the nightcap as it jumped out to 6-0 lead through four innings.

The Tritons used a two-out rally to plate two runs in the first. Daley started it with a single to short and scored on Irene Travis' two-run blast to center. UMSL added to its lead in the second as Scaramuzzi led off the inning with a shot to center.

Lamos hit her second home run of the day in the fourth. Anna VanGundy led off the inning with a walk and went to second on Widule's one-out single to left. Lamos fell behind in the count then hit a 1-2 offering to center for her fifth home run of the season to make it 6-0.

The Hawks got one of those runs back in the fifth as Bailey Mitchell led off the frame with a homer to left center.

The Tritons added to its lead with two more in the fifth. With two out, VanGundy singled to left and then Widule hit a two-run homer to left to make it 8-1.

Quincy made it 8-2 with one out in the seventh on Jennings second solo home run of the day.

UMSL had nine hits in game two and was led by Daley and Travis with two apiece. Jenna Towle picked up the win in the circle allowing two runs on four hits while striking out eight in the complete game effort to move to 6-2 on the season.

The Tritons are back in action this weekend as they head to Liberty, Mo., on Saturday to take on William Jewell in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
