ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team extended its winning streak to a season-high eight games with a sweep at William Jewell on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons (18-10, 4-0 GLVC) won the first game 8-1 and the nightcap 5-0.
Game 1 – UMSL 8 William Jewell 1
UMSL got on the board first with a run in the top of the third.
Anna VanGundy was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and went to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Jamie Widule. With two out,
McKenzie Lamos drove in VanGundy with a double down the right field line.
The Tritons added to their lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. UMSL got three straight walks to start the inning to load the bases.
Corinne Daley scored the first run of the frame on a wild pitch and then
Annie Scaramuzzi doubled down the left field line to drive in
Irene Travis to make it 3-0.
The Tritons broke it open in the seventh scoring five runs on five hits and an error. Daley started the rally with a one out single to short. Travis followed with a single up the middle. With two out, Scaramuzzi hit a ground-rule double to center to bring in Daley. VanGundy drove in Travis and Scaramuzzi with a single down the left field line to make it 6-0.
Widule reached on a throwing error which allowed VanGundy to advance to third. Widule then stole second to put two in scoring position for
Maddie Snemis. Snemis walked to load the bases for Lamos. Lamos singled up the middle to score VanGundy and Widule with the final runs of the inning.
The Cardinals (4-18, 0-6 GLVC) got a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh from Ella Hoffman for the final margin.
UMSL outhit WJC 10-3 in the contest and were led by Lamos, Scaramuzzi and VanGundy with two hits apiece. Lamos drove in three runs while Scaramuzzi and VanGundy had two RBI each.
Ashley Borowitz picked up the win tossing her fourth straight complete game to improve to 6-3. She gave up one run on three hits while striking out seven to improve to 6-3 on the season.
Game 2 – UMSL 5 William Jewell 0
The Tritons scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning in the nightcap to break the scoreless tie. VanGundy and Widule hit back-to-back singles to start the inning.
Katie Schaake reached on a throwing error by the catcher which allowed VanGundy to score on the error and sent Widule to third. Lamos drove in Widule with a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Widule.
UMSL tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth. Widule led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on Schaake's single through the right side of the infield. Lamos drove in Widule with a double to left center as Schaake advanced to third.
Courtney Settles drove in Schaake with a sacrifice fly to right and Travis capped the scoring with a single to right to drive in Lamos.
That was all the run support that
Jenna Towle needed as she tossed a complete game five-hit shutout while striking out four and didn't walk a batter to pick up her third straight win and improve to 7-2.
The Tritons had nine hits in the second game and were led by Travis who had four. Lamos, Daley, VanGundy, Widule and Schaake had one hit apiece.
UMSL returns to the diamond on Sunday afternoon taking on Truman State in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
