Baseball’s Late Rallies Come Up Short at William Jewell

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team had a pair of late game rallies come up short as it was swept in its doubleheader at William Jewell on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons (12-12, 5-2 GLVC) dropped the first game 11-8 and the nightcap 10-9.

Game 2 – William Jewell 10 UMSL 9
The Cardinals (17-8, 7-4 GLVC) struck first in game two scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. With one out, Dawson Tweet and Alex Epp hit back-to-back homers to make it 2-0 three batters in. Kaden Owens drove in Jordan Phillips with a ground-rule double to make it 3-0.

UMSL tied the game in the second thanks to a two-run triple from Carson Holin that scored Andrew Buescher and Justin Simard. Holin scored the tying run on Cooper Blythe's sacrifice fly to left.

The Tritons took a 4-3 lead in the fourth. With one out, Bryce Kulinski reached on a bunt single up the first base line. With two outs, he stole second and scored on Jake Isaac's single down the left field line.

William Jewell regained the lead in its half of the fourth scoring two runs on three hits. Jonah Sanford tied the game with a double to left and then Tweet drove in the go-ahead run with a single up the middle.

UMSL answered scoring two runs on four hits in the fifth. With two out, Mitchell Green doubled to right center scoring Buescher and Holin to make it 6-5.

The Cardinals responded scoring four runs on three hits in their half of the fifth. Caleb Blasi tied the game with a fielder's choice to second. Jake Wilcox drove in the go-ahead run with a double down the left field line and then Tweet drove in two more with a double down the right field line.

The Tritons brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the sixth but a fly out and a strike out ended the threat.

William Jewell added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. With two out, Will Brant hit a solo home run to right to make it 10-6.

UMSL loaded the bases in the seventh thanks to two walks and a hit by pitch. Kameron Laskowski scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 10-7 and then with two out Brandon Olion singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Kulinski and Isaac Powers to make it a one-run game. Olion stole second but was left stranded as a ground out to short ended the game.

The Tritons had 11 hits in the nightcap and were led by Olion, Buescher, Holin and Kulinski with two hits apiece. Nick Torres took the loss allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out three in four innings pitched to fall to 2-2 on the season.

UMSL trailed 11-0 after four innings. The Cardinals scored three runs on four hits in the second then busted it open in the third as they sent 10 batters to the plate scoring seven runs on three hits, three hit by pitches and an error. WJC added another run in the fourth on an RBI double from Wilcox.

The Tritons got on the board with a pair of runs in the fifth. With one out, Logan Mantz homered to left center and then with two away Braedon Stoakes hit an inside the park home run.

Green drove in Olion with a single in the sixth to make it 11-3. UMSL scored five more in the seventh highlighted by Holin's three-run homer for the final margin.

The Tritons had 13 hits in the opener and were led by Stoakes, Simard, Holin and Isaacs with two hits each. Brady Krile (1-4) got the start in game one allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts.

UMSL and William Jewell conclude their four-game series with a single game on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Talley Stadium.
