ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team dropped the finale of its four-game series at William Jewell 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in Liberty, Mo. The Tritons fall to 12-13, 5-3 GLVC while the Cardinals improve to 18-8, 8-4 GLVC.
William Jewell took the early lead scoring two runs on two hits in the bottom of the second. Jordan Phillips led off the inning with a walk and went to third on Will Brant's infield single. With one out, Jonah Sanford dropped down a squeeze bunt that scored Phillips and advanced Brant to second. Quincy Aldrich doubled to left field to drive in Brant with the final run of the frame.
The Cardinals extended their lead with a run in the third. Dawson Tweet led off the inning with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout to short. With two out, Phillips reached on an error by
Kameron Laskowski allowing Tweet to score.
UMSL got on the board in the sixth.
Jake Isaacs led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on a groundout to second.
Justin Simard singled to left to put runners on the corner with one out for
Carson Holin. Holin drove in Isaacs with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Tritons had the tying runs in scoring position with two out in the seventh but a strike out ended the inning.
UMSL outhit William Jewell 8-6 in the contest and was led by Simard with three hits while
Andrew Buescher had a pair of hits.
Jacob Arndt took the loss giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits but walked three to fall to 1-2 on the season.
Adam Rose gave the Tritons a chance to come back holding the Cardinals scoreless over his 5.2 innings pitched while striking out four and giving up four hits.
UMSL returns home this Friday (March 31) to begin a four-game series against Indianapolis at 2 p.m. at the UMSL Baseball Field.
