Tritons Sweep Bulldogs For 10th Straight Victory

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team swept Truman State in a doubleheader at the Truman Softball Park in Kirksville, Mo., on Sunday afternoon to extend its winning streak to 10. The Tritons (20-10, 6-0 GLVC) rallied for a 10-5 win in the opener and won the second game 10-2 in six innings.

Game 1 – UMSL 10 Truman State 5
The Bulldogs (9-21, 1-5 GLVC) jumped out to the early lead scoring three runs on three hits and an error in the home half of the first. Alex Beard drove in the first run with a single up the middle to bring home Cassie Smith. With two out, Breianna Klein drove in Beard and Emily Eberwine with a double to make it 3-0.

UMSL got two of those runs back in the second. Megan Brown led off the inning with a walk and with two out Jamie Widule was hit by a pitch. Katie Schaake drove in both with a triple to left field.

The Tritons took the lead in the fifth scoring three runs on three hits and an error. UMSL loaded the bases with no one out on two singles and an error. Irene Travis drove in McKenzie Lamos with a sacrifice fly to left to tie the contest. Brown drove in Courtney Settles with a single up the middle to give the Tritons a 4-3 lead. Annie Scaramuzzi reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Corinne Daley with the final run of the inning.

Truman tied the game in its half of the fifth. Eberwine and Cameryn Patterson led off the inning with back-to-back singles. With runners on the corner and one out, Madi McCarty, running for Patterson, and Eberwine pulled off a double steal. McCarty came around to score on an error by Settles for the second run of the inning.

UMSL sent eight batters to the plate in the sixth scoring five runs on four hits and an error. Schaake led off the inning with a home run to left to give the Tritons the lead back. Lamos doubled to right and Settles singled to right to put runners on the corner with no one out. Lamos scored as Daley reached on an error by the first baseman to make it 7-5. Travis hit a three-run homer to left to extend the lead to 10-5.

The Tritons had 11 hits in the contest and were led by Lamos, Settles, Daley, Travis and Schaake with two apiece. Travis and Schaake combined to drive in seven runs. Mimi Bradley picked up the win in relief allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Game 2 – UMSL 10 Truman State 2 6 innings
UMSL took advantage of two Bulldog errors to score a pair of unearned runs in the second. Scaramuzzi reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Scaramuzzi scored on a throwing error by Annabel Zimmer as she tried to retire Anna VanGundy at first. Jamie Widule made it 2-0 lining a double to left center to score VanGundy.

Truman tied the game in the third with two runs on three hits. Patterson drove in Macy Taylor with a single to left and later in the inning Klein singled to right center to drive in Eberwine with the tying run.

The Tritons retook the lead in the fourth scoring four runs on four hits and an error. VanGundy reached on an error to start the inning and advanced to second on Widule's bunt single. Schaake advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt to first. Lamos drove in VanGundy with a single to short to make it 3-2. Settles followed with a double to left center to drive in Widule. Daley followed with a single up the middle to score Lamos and Settles scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

UMSL added three more in the fifth. With one out, VanGundy was hit by a pitch. Schaake walked with two down to put runners on first and second. Lamos drove in VanGundy with a single to make it 7-2. Settles drove in two more with a single to right.

The Tritons scored their final run in the sixth. With one out, Brown walked and went to second on Scaramuzzi's double to left center. Riley Schultz drove in Brown with a pinch-hit single through the left side of the infield.

Jenna Towle set down the Bulldogs in order in the sixth to complete the run rule victory.

UMSL outhit Truman 11-6 in the nightcap and was led by Lamos with three hits while Settles, Daley and Widule had two hits apiece. Towle improved to 8-2 on the season pitching 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of Bradley. Towle retired 10 of the 11 batters she faced allowing only one hit.

The Tritons begin a six-game homestand this Saturday (April 1) hosting Southwest Baptist in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at the UMSL Softball Field.
