UMSL Baseball Rallies for Split Against UIndy

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team rallied from an early deficit in game two to split its doubleheader against Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field. The Tritons (13-14, 6-4 GLVC) held on for a 7-5 win in the nightcap after dropping the opener 13-6.

Game 2 – UMSL 7 UIndy 5
The Greyhounds (13-10, 1-9 GLVC) jumped out to an early lead in the second game scoring two runs on two hits and an error in the top of the first. Nick Lukac drove in Drew Donaldson with a single to center to make it 1-0 and Caleb Vaughn scored on a wild pitch for the second run of the frame.

UMSL countered in the home half of the first sending nine batters scoring five runs on four hits and an error. Braedon Stoakes struck out swinging to start the game but reached first on a dropped third strike. Kameron Laskowski reached on a sacrifice bunt to third as Lukac's throw to first was offline allowing Stoakes and Laskowski to advance to third and second respectively. Brandon Olion tied the game with a single to center.

Leighton Keller followed with a double to right to put two in scoring position. With one out, Bryce Kulinski reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Mitchell Green gave the Tritons a 4-2 lead with a double to left center scoring Olion and Keller. Jake Isaacs drove in the final run of the inning with a ground out to short.

UMSL tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. With one out, Carson Holin and Kulinski reached on back-to-back singles. An error by Lukac allowed Holin to advance to third. Green drove in Holin with a single to left for his third RBI of the contest. Kulinski stole third and scored on Isaac's single to through the right side to make it 7-2.

UIndy made it interesting in the seventh scoring three runs on two hits and an error to cut into the deficit. Lukac walked with the bases loaded to drive in his second run of the game to make it 7-3. Brady Ware drove in two more with a single to make it 7-5. Dylan Wobbe came on for the Tritons and struck out Zach Williams for the second out of the inning. Zach Fell, running for Ware, stole second to put the tying run in scoring position.

Reid Rector walked to load the bases for Easton Good. Wobbe struck out Good looking on three pitches to pick up his fifth save of the season.

The Tritons outhit the Hounds 13-7 in the contest and were led by Stoakes, Holin, Kulinski, Green and Isaacs with two hits apiece. Nick Torres picked up the win allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits with a strikeout to improve to 3-2.

Game 1 – Uindy 13 UMSL 6
UIndy jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on three hits. Brandon DeWitt and Donaldson started the game with back-to-back singles. Vaughn drove in DeWitt with the first run with a single to left. Donaldson scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Lukac drove in Vaughn with a sacrifice fly to right with the final run of the frame.

The Greyhounds extended their lead with a run in the third. Lukac walked with the bases loaded to drive in DeWitt to make it 4-0.

UIndy tacked on two more in the sixth on Good's two-run homer to right center.

UMSL got on the board with a run on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Kulinski and Stoakes opened the frame with back-to-back singles. With one out, Keller drove in Stoakes with a double to left.

The Hounds added three more runs in the seventh on four hits. Vaughn led off the inning with a home run to left. With two out, Good drove in Lukac and Jared Bujdos with a single.

UIndy stretched its lead to 12-1 in the eighth scoring three runs without the benefit of a hit.

The Tritons kept the game going scoring three runs on a hit and an error in their half of the eighth. Kulinski scored on a wild pitch, Olion reached on a fielder's choice scoring Stoakes. Holin walked with the bases loaded to drive in Olion with the final run of the inning.

Donaldson drove in the Greyhounds final run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

UMSL scored its final two runs without a hit in the ninth. Jared Bryant drove in Stoakes with a bases loaded walk and Cooper Blythe drove in Keller with a groundout to first.

The Tritons were held to six hits in the opener and were led by Stoakes with two. Ryan Berry took the loss allowing four runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in three innings pitched to fall to 2-2 on the season.

UMSL and UIndy conclude their four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field beginning at noon.
