ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team swept Southwest Baptist in a doubleheader on Saturday to extend their winning streak to 12 at the UMSL Softball Field. The Tritons (22-10, 8-0 GLVC) rallied for a 5-3 win in game one and then won the second game 8-0 in six innings.
Game 1 – UMSL 5 SBU 3
The opener was scoreless until the Bearcats (8-24, 2-6) broke through with two runs in the fourth. Rylee Lunn drove in Bailey Pierce and Emma Vincent with a single up the middle.
UMSL responded sending nine batters to the plate in its half of the fourth scoring four runs on five hits and a pair of errors.
Courtney Settles led off the inning with a single up the middle and went to third on
Corinne Daley's double off the top of the fence in left.
Irene Travis drove in Settles with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 2-1. Daley advanced to third on the play as Kaitlyn Ragsdale's throw back into the infield was wild. Daley scored on
Megan Brown's ground ball to third as Chloee Sams throw was offline.
Back-to-back singles from
Annie Scaramuzzi and
Anna VanGundy loaded the bases for
Jamie Widule. Widule hit a 1-0 offering from Paige Leithead back up the middle to score Brown and Scaramuzzi to give the Tritons a 4-2 lead.
UMSL added an insurance run in the fifth as Daley hit a solo home run to left to make it 5-2.
SBU cut the deficit to two in the sixth as Margo Frossard led off the inning with a home run to center. The Bearcats had the tying runs on base but
Mimi Bradley got out of the jam retiring Alyssa Reed on a ground out to
McKenzie Lamos.
SBU threatened again in the seventh loading the bases with one out but Bradley retired Shalie Wooden on a pop up to Travis and struck out Emma Vincent to end the game.
The Tritons had seven hits in the opener and were led by Daley and Scaramuzzi with two apiece.
Ashley Borowitz picked up the win allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts against two walks in five-plus innings pitched to improve to 7-3. Bradley pitched the final two innings allowing two hits and two walks to pick up her second save of the season.
Game 2 – UMSL 8 SBU 0 six innings
UMSL scored in four of the six innings in the nightcap. It scored two runs each in the second and third innings, one in the fourth and three in the sixth for the run-rule victory.
The Tritons got infield singles from VanGundy and Lamos to put runners on the corner with two out in the second for Settles. Settles hammered a 2-2 pitch off the top of the fence in right to score both runners and give UMSL a 2-0 lead.
UMSL loaded the bases with no out in the third and got a run on a passed ball as Brown scored from third to make it 3-0. Widule drove in Scaramuzzi with a single to right to make it 4-0.
The Tritons extended their lead with another run in the fourth. Settles led off the inning with a walk, went to second on Brown's two-out single down the left field line and scored on Scaramuzzi's single to right center.
UMSL sealed the victory scoring three runs on five hits and an error in the sixth. Travis led off the inning with a bunt double down the third base line that hit off the bag and bounced over. Brown drove her in a with a single down the left field line to make it 6-0. With one out, Scaramuzzi doubled to right and went to third on VanGundy's groundout back to the pitcher.
Widule drove in Scramuzzi with a single to left to extend the lead to 7-0.
Maddie Snemis reached on a bunt single back to the pitcher and throwing error by Shalie Wooden allowed Widule to take third. Snemis advanced to second on the play as Kennedy Griffin dropped the throw trying to tag Snemis which allowed Widule to score the final run.
The Tritons outhit the Bearcats 10-1 in game two and were led by Widule with three while Settles, Brown, Scaramuzzi and VanGundy had two hits apiece. Widule and Settles combined to drive in four runs in the nightcap.
Jenna Towle picked up the complete game shutout victory allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out two to improve to 9-2 on the season.
UMSL continues its six-game homestand on Sunday afternoon hosting Rockhurst at 12 p.m. at the UMSL Softball Field.
