ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team dropped a 15-2 decision in seven innings to Maryville in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field. The Tritons are 16-18 on the season while the Saints improve to 21-10.
UMSL jumped out to the early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. With two out,
Brandon Olion walked and scored on
Leighton Keller's two-run home run down the left field line.
Maryville cut the Triton lead in half with a run in the second. Matt Arnold hit a two-out single to left that scored Jacob Hagar.
The Saints took the lead with three runs in the fourth. Andy Bunton led off the inning with a solo home run to left field to tie the game. With two out, Elias Stevens dumped single into left that brought home Camden Ruby and Jack Zebig.
UMSL loaded the bases with two out in its half of the fourth and had a chance to retake the lead but
Braedon Stoakes flew out to deep left to end the inning.
Maryville sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth scoring five runs on three hits. Michael Gould had the big hit in the inning with a grand slam to left center to make it 8-2. Stevens drove in his third run of the game with a double to left that scored Zeb Roos.
The Saints batted around in the sixth as they sent 10 hitters to the plate scoring six runs on two hits. Roos had the big hit in the frame with a three-run homer to left center.
The Tritons were held to five hits in the contest with Keller,
Justin Simard,
Kameron Laskowski,
Mitchell Green and
Cooper Blythe having one apiece.
UMSL continues its nine-game homestand on Friday afternoon hosting Southwest Baptist in the start of a four-game series at 2 p.m. at the UMSL Baseball Field.
