ST. LOUIS – Bryce Kulinski's walk-off home run leading off the bottom of the ninth inning gave Missouri-St. Louis an 11-10 in game one of its doubleheader against Southwest Baptist at the UMSL Baseball Field on Friday afternoon. The Tritons (18-18, 11-7 GLVC) rallied for a 14-7 win in game two.
Game 1 – UMSL 11 Southwest Baptist 10
SBU (7-29, 3-15 GLVC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to two home runs in the first two innings. Zeke Skinner hit a solo home run with one out in the first and then in the second Tremayne Mungin hit a two-run shot to left center.
UMSL answered with a pair of runs in its half of the second. With two out, Justin Simard started the rally with a double down the left field line and scored on Andrew Buescher double to left center. Buescher scored on Mitchell Green's triple to left center.
The Tritons took the lead in the third as Brandon Olion drove in Jake Isaacs with a single up the middle. With two out, Leighton Keller stole second, advanced to third on a single by Carson Holin and scored on a throwing error by Skinner.
The Bearcats regained the lead in the fourth on Mungin's second two-run homer of the game that made it 5-4.
SBU extended its lead back to three with a pair of runs in the fifth. Kayden Lewis led off the inning with a home run to center and later in the inning Mungin singled to center to bring home Tanner Lumley.
UMSL countered with four runs in its half of the fifth. Simard drove in Olion with a single to center. Buescher put the Tritons in front doubling down the left field to drive in three.
The Bearcats came right back with two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to take a 10-8 lead.
UMSL tied the game in the seventh scoring two runs on four hits. Kulinski drove in the tying runs with a single down the right field line scoring Simard and Carson Holin. The Tritons had a chance to retake the lead but a groundout to short ended the inning.
Kulinski wasted little time winning the game in the ninth as he swung at the first pitch and hit it over the fence in left for his second home run of the season.
UMSL outhit SBU 15-11 in the contest as 13 of the 15 hits came from spots 5-9 in the lineup. Holin, Simard and Buescher had three hits apiece while Green and Kulinski added two hits each. Brady Krile picked up the win pitching the final three innings allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out two to improve to 2-5.
Game 2 – UMSL 14 Southwest Baptist 7
The Bearcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Skinner drove in the first run with a double to right center. Skinner scored the second run on a wild pitch, Joe Brown drove in the third run with a single to short and Sal Jacobo scored on a throwing error by Keller.
The Tritons got two of those runs back in the second. Buescher started the inning with a double down the left field line. With one out, Green drove in Simard and Holin with a double to left center to cut the deficit in half.
UMSL sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth scoring six runs on four hits and two errors to take the lead. Kameron Laskowski scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Green scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball, Olion drove in Isaacs and Braedon Stoakes with a single to right. Buescher drove in Olion with a double down the right field line for the final run of the inning.
The Tritons extended its lead with three more in the fifth. Isaacs drove in Laskowski with a double down the left field line. Isaacs scored on a fielder's choice back to the pitcher and Olion drove in Stoakes with a sacrifice fly to center.
SBU got two runs back in the sixth on two-run homer to left from Dean Hagenhoff but UMSL answered with three runs in its half of the sixth highlighted by Olion's two-run single up the middle.
The Bearcats scored their final run in the seventh on a wild pitch.
The Tritons had 10 hits in the nightcap and were led by Green, Buescher and Olion with two each. After a rocky start, Logan Mantz settled in giving UMSL six solid innings on the mound allowing six runs, four earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts to improve to 2-1 on the year.
The Tritons and Bearcats continue their four-game series with a single game on Saturday afternoon beginning at noon at the UMSL Baseball Field.
