ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team ran its winning streak to three with a 12-2 win in eight innings over Southwest Baptist on Saturday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field. The Tritons improve to 19-18, 12-7 GLVC while the Bearcats fall to 7-30, 3-16 GLVC.
UMSL jumped out to the early lead with a pair of first inning runs.
Braedon Stoakes led off the game with a bunt single to third as the pitcher and third baseman collided on the play. Two pitches later,
Brandon Olion lined a double to left center to drive in Stoakes from first. Olion scored on a throwing error by the second baseman on a pick-off attempt. Olion was caught in a rundown between second and third but Bryson Luna's throw to third was low and got past Sal Jacobo allowing Olion to score on the error.
SBU tied the game in the sixth on a two-run homer run to left center from Jacobo.
The Tritons retook the lead in their half of the sixth as
Andrew Buescher went the other way and hit a two-run blast to left field that scored
Leighton Keller.
UMSL broke it open in the eighth as it sent nine batters to the plate scoring eight runs on four hits and an error. Stoakes and Olion both singled to lead off the inning. Keller doubled to left center to bring in Stoakes. Buescher brought home Olion with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 6-2.
Carson Holin dropped a squeeze bunt between first and the mound that allowed Keller to score. A throwing error by Eli Smock at first allowed
Justin Simard to score and sent Holin to third.
Mitchell Green was hit by a pitch and
Jake Isaacs walked to load the bases for
Bryce Kulinski. Kulinski hit a 2-0 pitch over the fence in left for a grand slam that ended the game.
The Tritons outhit the Bearcats 11-4 in the contest and were led by Stoakes, Olion, Keller and Kulinski with two apiece.
Adam Rose picked up the win allowing two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts in six innings pitched to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Dylan Wobbe retired all six hitters he faced to notch his sixth save of the season.
UMSL and SBU conclude their four-game series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for 12 p.m. at the UMSL Baseball Field.
