ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's tennis team snapped its nine-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over Illinois Springfield on Friday afternoon at the UMSL Tennis Courts. The Tritons improve to 4-11, 1-3 GLVC while the Prairie Stars drop to 3-8, 1-3 GLVC.
UMSL won two of the three doubles matches to win the opening point.
Jose Mayorga and
Joshua Mackey fell to Sebastian Jonsson and Ivan Esguerra 7-5 in the first doubles contest.
Juan Vigil and Tamnin Ramnath defeated Rafa Rojas and Phillip Rydell in the second doubles match while
AJ Burrows and
Pascal Maclean-Wood won their doubles contest by default.
In the singles portion, the Tritons won the first three matches to clinch the victory. Maclean-Wood won his match at number six singles by default, Mayorga knocked off Jonsson 7-6, 6-3 at number one singles and Vigil beat Esguerra 6-3, 7-5 in the second singles contest. Mackey won the first set against Pablo Herrera 7-6 but Herrera came back to win the final two sets 6-3, 6-1 to get UIS on the board. Rojas defeated Ramnath in straigt sets 6-3, 6-1 and Rydell defeated Burrows 5-7, 7-5, 10-7 in the fifth singles match.
UMSL hosts Lewis in their regular season finale on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the UMSL Tennis Courts.
