ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team snapped its four-game losing with a sweep of Missouri S&T on Friday afternoon at the S&T Softball Field. The Tritons won the opener 8-1 and took the nightcap 6-0. UMSL improves to 25-15, 11-5 GLVC while the Miners drop to 16-20, 8-8 GLVC.
Game 1 – UMSL 8 Missouri S&T 1
The Tritons jumped out to 2-0 lead in the top of third loading the bases on two singles and an error.
Irene Travis drove in
Maddie Snemis with the first run of the game with a single to right.
Megan Brown drove in
Courtney Settles with a ground out to second to make it 2-0.
UMSL added to its lead in the fifth. With two out,
Jamie Widule reached on a fielding error by the pitcher, advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on
Annie Scaramuzzi's single to right center.
The Tritons broke it open in the seventh scoring five runs on four hits and an error. Scaramuzzi and
Anna VanGundy each drove in a run as they were hit by pitches with the bases loaded.
Mimi Bradley drove in two more with a double to left and
Corinne Daley, running for Bradley, scored the final run on a fielding error by the second baseman.
S&T loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh but only got one run on an RBI single from Hannah Antzoulatos.
Ashley Borowitz got the final three outs to seal the victory.
UMSL outhit the Miners 11-8 in the contest and were led by Travis, Scaramuzzi, Snemis and
McKenzie Lamos with two each. Bradley picked up the win in the circle by allowing one run on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts in six innings pitched to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Game 2 – UMSL 6 Missouri S&T 0
The Tritons scored all the runs they needed in the nightcap in the fourth inning. UMSL sent 10 batters to the dish scoring six runs on four hits and three S&T errors. Travis started the inning reaching on a throwing error by the second baseman and went to second on the error. With one out, Scaramuzzi singled to right bring home Travis. Widule scored on a fielding error by the shortstop to make it 2-0. Scaramuzzi scored on Snemis' single to short. Settles drove in VanGundy with a single through the right side of the infield. Lamos drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single to right to bring in Settles and Snemis.
That was all the run support that Scaramuzzi needed as she held the Miners to just two hits while striking out seven to pick up the complete game shutout and improve to 3-3 on the season.
UMSL had eight hits in the contest and was led by Snemis with two.
The Tritons continue their road swing on Sunday with a doubleheader against Drury at Meador Park in Springfield, Mo. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
