ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team upset sixth ranked UIndy 1-0 on Saturday evening to advance to championship Sunday at the GLVC Softball Tournament at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill. The Tritons improve to 33-19 while the Greyhounds drop to 49-7.
UIndy had the game's first scoring chance in the bottom of the third. With two out, Jocelyn Calvin and Megan Nichols got back-to-back singles but
Annie Scaramuzzi retired Emily O'Connor on a groundout to third to end the inning.
The Hounds Kenzee Smith was perfect through 4.1 innings as she retired the first 13 Tritons she faced before running into trouble. Scaramuzzi hit a ball back to the circle and reached when Smith's throw to first was offline to break up the perfect game. Scaramuzzi advanced to second on
Maddie Snemis' sacrifice bunt to third.
Riley Schultz broke up the no-hitter and shutout with one swing. She lined a 2-1 pitch down the left field line for a double that scored Scaramuzzi.
Scaramuzzi worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth striking out Lexy Rees to end the inning.
UIndy got the tying run on base in the sixth with a two-out single from Dominique Proctor but Scaramuzzi got Maddie Stout to fly out to center to end the inning.
The Greyhounds had one more chance in the seventh. With one out, Calvin doubled to left center. Nichols was hit by a pitch to put the winning run on base. O'Connor fouled out to
Anna VanGundy down the right field as Calvin and Nichols advanced to second and third on the play. Scaramuzzi and Rees battled through a seven pitch with Scaramuzzi winning the battle as she struck out Rees to end the game.
UMSL had two hits in the contest with Schultz and
McKenzie Lamos recording a hit apiece. Scaramuzzi tossed a four-hit complete game shutout and struck out 10 to improve to 8-4 on the season.
The Tritons and Hounds are scheduled to play again on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the GLVC Championship contest later in the afternoon.
