ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team avenged an earlier loss to Rockhurst with an 8-2 win over the Hawks in an elimination game on Saturday afternoon at the GLVC Softball Tournament at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill. The Tritons improve to 32-19 while the Hawks end their season with a record of 21-26.
After being one-hit by Breanna Droge in its opener on Thursday, UMSL jumped all over Droge in the first inning on Saturday scoring four runs on four hits and an error.
Irene Travis led off the game with a double to center and went to third on
Courtney Settles single to left center. With one out,
Megan Brown drove in Travis with the first run of the game with a single to left.
Annie Scaramuzzi reached on an error by the first baseman to load the bases.
Maddie Snemis drove in Settles with a groundout to second for the second run of the inning.
Riley Schultz had the big hit in the inning delivering a two-run single to center that scored Brown and Scaramuzzi.
The Tritons added to their lead in the third. With one out, Brown walked and scored on Scaramuzzi's two-run home run to left center.
Rockhurst got a run back in its half of the third as Calli Wibbenmeyer singled off Scaramuzzi to bring home Jaden Santoni. The Hawks got another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Riley McGovern that scored Maya Gallagher.
UMSL added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. With one out,
Anna VanGundy and Settles walked to put two on with two out.
McKenzie Lamos drove in VanGundy with a double to right center to make it 7-2. Brown drove in Settles with the final run with an infield single to third.
The Tritons outhit Rockhurst 12-5 in the contest and were led by Brown with three hits while Travis, Scaramuzzi and Schultz had two hits apiece. Scaramuzzi got the start in the circle and allowed one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts in three innings of work.
Jenna Towle went the final four innings allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts to pick up her 12th win of the season.
