LIBERTY, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team rallied for a 3-1 win at William Jewell in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams on Friday evening at the William Jewell Soccer/Lacrosse Field in Liberty, Mo. The Tritons improve to 2-1-2, 1-0 GLVC while the Cardinals drop to 0-4, 0-1 GLVC.
WJC scored the first goal of the contest as Lux Sands scored from just outside the top of the penalty area in the third minute with assists from Kate Lawrence and Anea Bemeo.
UMSL got the equalizer in the 34th minute as
Jada Holloman scored from 10 yards out off a cross from
Julie Steiger for her second goal of the season.
The Tritons had 3-2 edge in shots with each team putting two shots on frame in the first 45 minutes. UMSL had a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Tritons scored the game-winner in the 73rd minute as
Jaycee Cotton headed home a corner kick from
Emily Bloomfield for her team leading third goal of the season.
UMSL added an insurance goal in the 89th minute as Holloman scored her second of the contest as she drove down the left side of the field and buried her shot inside the right post.
The Tritons outshot the Cardinals 6-0 in the second half to finish the contest with a 9-2 advantage in shots including 5-2 in shots on goal. UMSL took 11 corner kicks in the contest compared to one for Jewell.
The Tritons continue their three-game road trip on Sunday when they take on Rockhurst at 12 p.m. at Bourke Field in Kansas City.
