KANSAS CITY – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team improved to 2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 1-0 win at Rockhurst on Sunday afternoon. The Tritons improve to 3-1-2, 2-0 GLVC while the Hawks drop to 3-2-1, 1-1 GLVC.It's the Tritons first 2-0 start in GLVC play since 2005.
Rockhurst controlled possession for much of the first half and outshot UMSL 6-2 including 4-1 in shots on goal but
Grace Hastert stopped all four shots she faced to keep the Hawks off the board.
The Tritons broke the scoreless deadlock in the 33rd minute as
Kendal White deflected Jacqueline Nieter's clearance attempt off the hands of Taylor James and inside the left post for her first goal of the season.
Rockhurst had a couple of chances after White's goal at the equalizer but Hastert saved both attempts.
UMSL had three attempts to extend its lead early in the second half but James made two saves and the third attempt was blocked.
The Hawks had another chance at the equalizer in the 63rd minute but Elle Kimball's attempt was saved by Hastert.
Despite outshooting the Tritons 8-5 in the second half it was UMSL that had the more dangerous chances as it outshot the Hawks 4-1 in shots on goal.
Rockhurst finished the game with a 14-7 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks but Hastert made five saves to pick up her second win and first collegiate shutout.
Julie Steiger led the Tritons with two shots in the contest.
UMSL concludes its three-game road trip next Sunday as it travels across the river to take on No. 13 McKendree at 12 p.m. at Leemon Field.
