ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's tennis competed at the Quincy Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Reservoir Park in Quincy, Ill. Saturday's matches were canceled due to weather.
Raphael Kerndl and
Juan Vigil combined to go 2-0 in the number one doubles draw. The duo won their first match over Quincy's Sebastian Gomez and Inigo Vellacampa 6-3 and then defeated McKendree's Seb Holden and Lorenzo del Biondo 7-6 (7-3) in a tiebreak.
In the number two doubles draw it was the UMSL duo
Jose Mayorga and
Joshua Mackey going 1-1. They defeated Quincy's Zach Willing and Ettore Pavesi in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-4) in their first match but lost to McKendree's Vishnu Prasad and Luka Kalenic 6-2.
Dominick Cuchran and
Tanin Ramnath lost to Quincy's Gianni Lopez and Joseph Restrado in a tiebreak 7-6 (8-6) and were defeated by McKendree's Bendix Schröder and Giacoma Valerga 6-2 in the number three doubles draw.
AJ Burrows and
Gavin Sohn went 0-2 in the number four doubles draw dropping a 6-2 decision to Quincy's Pablo Mateos Niella and Marko Cucuck and then lost its second match to McKendree's Arhaan Pahwa and Aimar Oregui 6-1.
In singles action, Kerndl defeated Lopez in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) while Cuchran fell to Missouri Baptist's Arkhip Tokmakov in three sets. Cuchran won the first set in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-5) but dropped the next two 6-4 and 10-6.
Mayorga won his first singles match by injury over Missouri Baptist's Dragon Omcikus. Vigil lost to Holden in straight sets 6-0, 6-3.
The Tritons return to the courts on Friday (Oct. 6) hosting Missouri Baptist at 2 p.m. at the UMSL Tennis Courts.
