ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team lost 2-1 to McKendree on Sunday afternoon at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Ill. The Tritons drop to 3-2-2, 2-1 GLVC while the Bearcats improve to 6-1, 2-1 GLVC.
McKendree started fast scoring twice in the first seven minutes of the contest. Destiny Johnson scored the first goal 94 seconds into the game firing a shot from about 16 yards out past
Grace Hastert into the lower right corner for her second goal of the season with assists from Lena Higgins and Morgan Bova.
The Bearcats made it 2-0 in the seventh minute. Anna Stifler ran down a loose ball on the right side of the box and tried to cross it but
Jaycee Cotton got in front trying to block it but it hit off her foot and deflected in for an own goal.
McKendree outshot UMSL 10-4 in the first 45 minutes including 9-0 in shots on goal and had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Hastert made seven saves in the opening half for the Tritons.
UMSL got a goal back early in the second half scoring off a corner kick.
Emily Bloomfield served the kick into the box to Cotton who flicked it onto to
Jada Holloman who was wide open in the six-yard box and scored past Abby Tucker for team leading fourth goal of the season.
Cotton had two chances at the equalizer in the span of 0:34 seconds in the 80th minute. She nearly headed home a corner kick but Tucker made a diving save to punch it for another corner. Cotton got a head on the second attempt but couldn't get enough on it to get it past Tucker.
The Tritons were unable to get another scoring opportunity in the final 10 minutes.
UMSL took five shots in the second half and put three of those on target to finish with nine in the contest but was outshot 16-9 including 10-3 in shots on goal. Each team took five corner kicks in the contest. Hastert finished with a career-high nine saves in the match.
The Tritons are back at home this Friday (Sept. 29) hosting Indianapolis at 5 p.m. at Don Dallas Field.
