Men’s Soccer Falls on Late Goal at McKendree

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought contest against McKendree 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Ill. The Tritons drop to 2-1-2, 1-1-1 GLVC while the Bearcats improve to 5-0-2, 3-0 GLVC.

The loss snaps UMSL's four game unbeaten streak to start the season.

McKendree, receiving votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, scored the first goal of the game in the 34th as Matteo Schubert scored off a throw in for his first goal of the season.

The Tritons had a chance at the equalizer less than a minute later but Devin Livingstone's shot from the top of the penalty area was blocked. UMSL had two more chances late in the half but Ty Gordon missed both of his shots wide.

The Bearcats had a 7-3 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes including 2-0 in shots on goal.

The Tritons got the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Austin Reis booted the ball downfield and it was deflected to Melo Mensah. Mensah dribbled into the middle of the field, drew in the defense then passed it to an open Gordon on the right-hand side. Gordon finished the chance into the lower left corner for his first goal of the season.

The game remained tied until the 81st minute. McKendree won a throw in deep in UMSL's end. A long throw found James Martin inside the six-yard box. Martin's first attempt hit off the crossbar and bounced back to Olle Ridelius who tried to put in the rebound, Reis got on a hand on it but it bounced back to Martin who scored into an open net for his first goal of the season.

The Tritons were outshot in the contest 11-4 including 3-1 in shots on goal. Each team had two corner kicks in the contest.

UMSL hosts the University of Indianapolis in its home opener this Friday (Sept. 29) at 7:30 p.m. at Don Dallas Field.
