ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought battle against eighth ranked Indianapolis 1-0 on Friday evening at Don Dallas Soccer Field. The Tritons fall to 2-2-2, 1-2-1 GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 7-0-1, 5-0 GLVC.
The first 45 minutes were evenly played with each side attempting four shots but two of the Hounds four attempts were saved by
Austin Reis. UMSL had a 2-1 edge in corners.
Action picked up early in the second half as UIndy had two shot attempts saved by Reis in the span of 1:45. He robbed Kabiru Gafar in the 57th minute and Tylin Broaders in the 59th minute.
The Greyhounds had another chance in the 63rd minute but once again Reis was up to the challenge turning away another shot from Gafar.
The Tritons had their lone scoring chance in the 69th minute. After a free kick,
Ty Gordon tried to score from the left side of the box but a UIndy defender saved Gordon's shot off the line preventing the goal.
The Hounds kept the pressure on generating three more chances that were all turned away by Reis but resulted in three corner kicks. On the third corner kick UIndy broke through as Niklas Thanhofer headed home a corner from Michael Tselios for his second goal of the season in the 80th minute.
UMSL put the pressure on in the final 10 minutes but were only able to generate one shot which came from
Melo Mensah but his shot missed high in the 87th minute.
UIndy outshot the Tritons 12-5 in the second stanza including 8-1 in shots on goal and had a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Hounds finished with 16 shots in the contest with 10 on goal while UMSL had nine shot attempts but only one on goal.
Reis made a season-high nine saves in the contest with seven of those coming in the second half.
The Tritons are back at home this Sunday hosting Lewis at 2:30 p.m. The Flyers defeated McKendree 1-0 on Friday evening.
