ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Washburn 3-1 to pick up its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Don Dallas Field. The Tritons move to 1-0-1 while the Ichabods drop to 1-1.
Washburn scored the opening goal in the ninth minute. Lakin Rold played a ball ahead from near the midfield stripe and found Riley Wells on the other end. Wells got on a head on it and passed it to Khloe Schuckman who shot it from just outside the top of the box into an open goal.
UMSL had a chance to even the score in the 17th minute winning a free kick deep in the Ichabods end.
Emily Bloomfield's service found
Emma Ealey at the back post but Ealey's diving header attempt sailed just wide of the goal.
The Tritons got the equalizer in the 26th minute.
Jaycee Cotton threw it in for
Kendal White but a Washburn defender got her head on it but couldn't clear it. White picked up the loose ball, drove down the right side and crossed it into the middle of the penalty area for
Sophie Steinmetz. Steinmetz's shot hit off the right post and caromed in for her first collegiate goal.
UMSL held a 5-4 edge in shots at the intermission but each side had two shots on goal.
The Tritons took the lead in the 57th minute scoring off a corner kick. Bloomfield served the ball into the box but it was headed by Aubrey Tanksley but not out as
Taylor Martin was able to corral it and found Cotton in the center of the box who scored from about eight yards out for her second goal of the season.
UMSL had a chance to extend its lead in the 65th minute as
Kayley Judy ripped a shot from just outside the top of the box that struck off the crossbar and bounced out.
The Ichabods had two chances to equalize the contest in the span of five minutes. After a give-and-go between Viviana Soto-Herrera and Belle Kennedy, Kennedy got free in in the box and shot it from six yards out but
Mary Kate Neal was able to stick out her right leg to make the save. Washburn's second attempt came in the 75th as Schuckman took a shot from the left side of the box that hit off the crossbar and stayed out.
The Tritons added an insurance goal in the 80th minute.
Eylesa Kellam drove down the right side of the field and crossed the ball into the box for
Jada Holloman. Holloman was able to pass it to
Candice Parziani who buried it into an open goal from about eight yards away for her first of the season.
UMSL finished the contest with a 10-6 advantage in shots including 4-3 in shots on goal. The Tritons had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
UMSL continues its season opening four-game homestand this Thursday, Sept. 7, against Ohio Dominican at 5 p.m. at Don Dallas Field.
