Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 18 Cedarville

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 18 Cedarville on Saturday afternoon at Don Dallas Field. The Tritons drop to 1-1-2 while the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-1.

UMSL had a 3-1 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes but neither side was able to put anything on target. Cedarville had the only dangerous chance as Payton Fraley hit a shot off the crossbar in the ninth minute.

The Yellow Jackets had a chance to jump on top in the 53rd but Rylee Griffith made a great save on a shot from close range by Fraley to keep the scoreless.

Cedarville broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. The Yellow Jackets won a free kick deep in the Triton end after Maddy Nelson was fouled. Nelson took the free kick, served it into the far side of the box to Fraley who passed it back to Megan McClish for the goal.

UMSL got the equalizer in the 68th minute. Kendal White was in a battle with Carlie Stutzman and Stutzman hauled her down in the penalty area for a penalty kick. Emily Bloomfield took the kick and buried it into the upper left corner for her first of the season.

The Yellow Jackets retook the lead in the two minutes later as Sophie Browndyke found Tiffany Campbell on the right side of the 18-yard box and Campbell beat Griffith to the upper left corner for her first of the season.

The Tritons had a chance to equalize in the final minute as Cedarville's keeper collided with one of her defenders and went down in the box. UMSL tried to cross it back into the box but the keeper recovered to intercept the attempt.

The Tritons had a 7-5 advantage in shots in the contest with each side putting three shots on target. The Yellow Jackets had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

UMSL begins a three-game road trip next Friday (Sept. 15) as it travels to Liberty, Mo., to take on William Jewell in the GLVC opener for both squads.
