SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team was less than a minute away from snapping a six-game losing streak against Illinois Springfield but instead had to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Prairie Stars at Kiwanis Stadium on Friday evening. The Tritons are now 3-3-4, 1-2-4 GLVC while the Prairie Stars are 4-3-3, 4-1-3 GLVC.
Each side had five shots including two on goal in the first 45 minutes but neither side was unable to get on the scoreboard.
UMSL broke the deadlock 1:15 into the second half. UIS tried to play a ball in deep but
Michael Quinn intercepted the pass and played a ball ahead to
Linus Saewe. Saewe got in behind the Prairie Star defense and beat the keeper to the lower left corner for his second goal of the season.
UIS had a chance at the equalizer in the 85th minute but Or Levinstein sailed his attempt over the bar.
The Prairie Stars scored the equalizer with 0:36 left. After a foul on UMSL deep in UIS's end, Edoardo Pinna sent the free kick down towards UMSL's penalty area. The ball was batted around and Joey Fitzgerald tried to head it past
Austin Reis. Reis made the initial save but couldn't secure and Levinstein got the rebound and scored inside the near post.
The Tritons were outshot in the contest 7-6 but each side had three shots on goal. Reis made two saves for UMSL.
The Tritons conclude their road trip on Sunday traveling to Lebanon, Ill., to take on McKendree at 2:30 p.m.
