ROLLA, Mo. – The No. 14 University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team fell in five sets at Missouri S&T on Saturday evening at Gibson Arena in Rolla, Mo. The Tritons drop to 15-5, 4-3 GLVC while the Miners improve to 8-13, 4-4 GLVC.
UMSL led by as many as five in the opening set but S&T rallied scoring six straight points to take a 17-16 lead after a kill from Isabelle Monaco. The Tritons retook the lead at 20-19 after a kill by
Alayna Santel but were unable to close out the stanza as the Miners scored sox of the final nine points to take the opener 25-23.
UMSL scored the first three points of the second set and never trailed leading by as many as 10 after a block by Santel and
Hannah Copeland. S&T pulled to within six but wouldn't get any closer as the Tritons ended the frame scoring six of the last seven points to win 25-14 and even the match at a set apiece.
The swing set saw 10 ties and six lead changes. UMSL led by as many as seven early but couldn't overcome a 9-1 run from the Miners that saw them take a 13-12 lead after a kill from Lexi Kosmopolis. The two sides traded points and were tied at 20 when S&T took control scoring five of the final six points to win 25-21 and regain the lead in the match.
The fourth stanza was tied early on before the Tritons pulled away building an 18-9 lead after a kill from
Caitlin Bishop. The Miners put up a fight pulling to within 19-15 after a kill by Madison Offerman but S&T wouldn't get any closer as UMSL ended the set on a 6-2 run to win 25-17 and force a fifth and deciding set.
The Tritons led by two early in the final frame but couldn't overcome a 7-0 run as the Miners rallied to take a five-point lead. UMSL fought their way back to within 10-8 after back-to-back kills from
Iyannah Jackson but wouldn't get any closer as S&T scored five of the final eight points to win 15-11.
The Tritons recorded a season-high 76 kills but committed 37 errors in 203 attempts to finish with a .192 attack percentage. Santel finished with a match and career-high 24 kills. She was joined in double figures by
Addison Voorhees with 16 kills while Jackson added 15 and Copeland had 11. Bishop dished out a career-high 64 assists while
Skylar Weaver had a career-high 31 kills.
The Miners finished the match hitting .212 with 47 kills against 11 errors in 170 attempts and were led by Alina Carrillo with 17 kills while Monaco added 14 kills. Annie Arand had 23 assists, Carrillo finished with 24 digs and Madison Smith added seven blocks.
UMSL is back at home next Friday (Nov. 1) hosting Truman State at 6 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
