FAYETTE, Iowa – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team kept pace in its push for the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament with a 2-1 win at Upper Iowa on Sunday afternoon. The Tritons improve to 5-4-6, 3-3-6 while the Peacocks drop to 1-10-4, 1-8-3 GLVC.
With the win, UMSL moves into a three-way tie with Lincoln and Quincy for the final spot in the conference tournament and trails Illinois Springfield by two points and Missouri S&T by a point with two games remaining.
The Tritons got on the board first in the 11th minute. UMSL sent a free kick deep into Upper Iowa territory. The defender tried to head the ball back to the keeper but the ball was misplayed and
Jon Campbell took advantage of the miscue scoring into an open goal for his seventh of the season.
The Peacocks tied the game in the 25th minute.
Michael Quinn was whistled for a handball in the penalty box resulting in a penalty kick. Thomas Walle converted the spot kick for his first goal of the season.
The game remained tied for the remainder of the half as the Tritons went to the locker room with a 5-4 edge in shots including 4-1 in shots on goal.
Playing with the wind, UMSL dominated the second half outshooting Upper Iowa 16-5 including 9-3 on shots on goal but were kept off the board until the 86th minute. Campbell fired a shot from just inside the penalty box that hit off the crossbar but stayed in play.
Gibson Hunt tracked down the loose ball and served it back into the box to Campbell who fired a shot off the underside of the crossbar and over the line for his league leading eighth goal of the campaign.
The Peacocks had one final chance in the last 0:30 but Kehinde Afolabi's shot was off target and the Tritons were able to run out the clock for their second straight win.
UMSL finished the game with a 21-9 advantage in shots including 13-4 in shots on goal.
Austin Reis made three saves in the second half.
The Tritons return home this Friday (Nov. 1) hosting William Jewell at 7:30 p.m. at Don Dallas Field.
