Box Score ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team shutout William Jewell 2-0 for its third straight win on Friday evening at Don Dallas Field. The Tritons improve to 6-4-6, 4-3-6 GLVC while the Cardinals drop to 5-8-3, 3-8-2 GLVC.
With the win on Friday UMSL is tied with Drury for seventh in the conference standings with 18 points and is currently in possession for the final spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. The Tritons are one point ahead of Rockhurst for the final spot but trail Illinois Springfield by two points and Missouri S&T by a point heading into the final game of the regular season on Sunday.
UIS currently sits in the fifth spot with 20 spots and S&T is sixth with 19 points.
The Tritons controlled play in the first 45 minutes doubling up William Jewell in shots 11-5 but each team had three shots on frame.
UMSL broke the scoreless deadlock near the 28-minute mark of the first half as
Mario Garcia blocked a clearance attempt and then fired a low line drive past the keeper into the lower right corner for his first collegiate goal.
Garcia wasn't finished as he added an assist in the 59th minute on
Jon Campbell's ninth goal of the season that gave the Tritons some insurance.
With their backs against the wall the Cardinals put the pressure on and generated some good chances on UMSL's end.
Jewell's best chance came in the 63rd minute as Walker Bond put a shot on frame that
Austin Reis made a leaping save to knock the ball over the bar for a corner kick. The Cardinals had another chance four minutes later but Reis made the save on Alexis Ibarra's attempt.
The Tritons outshot WJC 17-11 in the contest including 7-6 in shots on goal. Reis made seven saves to pick up his third shutout of the season. Campbell led UMSL with six shots in the contest.
The Tritons wrap up the regular season this Sunday (Nov. 3) hosting Truman State at 3 p.m. at Don Dallas Field. The Tritons will honor their nine seniors after the game on Sunday.
