ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team fought hard for 90 minutes but came up short in a 1-0 loss to Maryville on Friday evening at Don Dallas Soccer Field in St. Louis. The Tritons fall to 3-3-3, 1-2-3 GLVC while Saints improve to 4-4-1, 4-2 GLVC.
Neither side were able to generate many offensive chances as each attempted three shots in the first 45 minutes. Maryville's lone shot on goal came in the 28th minute and resulted in the only goal of the contest.
After a foul by UMSL, the Saints had a free kick deep in Triton territory. Carl Norby took the free kick serving it into the middle of the box. Sebastian Weitlaner got his head on it and flicked it to Lukas Molander at the back post. Molander scored from a tough angle into the upper left corner for his first goal of the season.
UMSL had a chance at the equalizer but
Jon Campbell's attempt missed wide left.
The Tritons outshot Maryville 6-3 in the second half and put three shots on goal but couldn't get anything past Steen Nielsen as he stopped all three chances including two at point blank range from
Linus Saewe.
Saewe's first chance at the equalizer came in the 86th minute as he tried to head home a corner kick but Nielsen made a diving save and the ball was cleared out for a throw in. Saewe had another chance less than 30 seconds later but headed his attempt right at Nielsen.
UMSL finished the game outshooting the Saints 9-6 including 4-2 in shots on goal.
The Tritons begin a two-game road trip next Friday traveling to Springfield, Ill., to take on Illinois Springfield at 7:30 p.m. at Kiwanis Stadium.
