ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team clinched its first postseason appearance since 2021 with a 3-1 win over Truman State in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon. The Tritons improve to 7-4-6, 5-3-6 while the Bulldogs finish their season with a record of 4-7-5, 3-6-5 GLVC.
With the win, UMSL clinched the sixth seed and will take on third seeded McKendree next Sunday (Nov. 10) at 3:30 p.m. at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Ill. The Tritons and Bearcats played to a 1-1 draw at McKendree on Oct. 13.
Truman had the game's first good scoring chance as Tyler Bouckaert put his shot on frame and
Austin Reis made a leaping save to knock it over the bar for a corner kick.
The Tritons broke the scoreless deadlock in the 26th minute as
Gibson Hunt tapped home a loose ball in front of goal with an assist from
Drew Schenk for his second goal of the season.
The Bulldogs countered in the 34th minute as Jack Johnson scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Bouckaert.
UMSL outshot Truman 8-5 in the opening half including 4-3 in shots on goal.
The Tritons postseason fate hung in the balance with 20 minutes to go until
Devin Livingstone hit a shot over Justin Olwig from the right edge of the penalty box for his third goal of the season. That goal along with Rockhurst's 3-1 win at Missouri S&T clinched UMSL's spot in the postseason and knocked out Missouri S&T.
UMSL added an insurance goal in the 75th minute. Schenk served a corner kick into the center of the box and Livingstone headed it towards goal.
JT Goldstein got a foot to it and redirected it into the goal for his first of the season.
The final 15 minutes saw a total of nine cards with two Truman players and assistant coach being sent off with red cards. The Bulldogs finished the contest with nine players on the pitch.
The Tritons celebrated their win by honoring their nine seniors in a postgame ceremony on the field.
