ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team turned in one of its best defensive performances of the season giving up a season-low 55 points in its 61-55 win over Quincy on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 10-13, 8-7 GLVC while the Hawks drop to 10-13, 5-10 GLVC.
UMSL led by as many as six points in the opening half as
Matt Enright was on fire knocking down five of nine shots including five three's as he recorded half of the Tritons points in the first 20 minutes.
Quincy closed the half scoring the final five points to pull within one at the intermission.
UMSL began the second half on a 10-4 run to stretch its lead to seven less than four minutes into the frame on a three-pointer from
Terrell Kabala.
The Hawks countered with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 42 after two free throws from Zion Richardson three minutes later.
Quincy never retook the lead as
Emanuel Prospere II scored on the next possession to spark an 11-0 run which gave the Tritons a 53-42 lead with 9:19 remaining.
UMSL's defense held the Hawks scoreless for nearly five minutes and without a field goal for close to 10 minutes as it continued to hold a double-digit lead.
Quincy got as close as six in the final minute but wouldn't get any closer as the Tritons sealed the victory.
UMSL shot 49 percent (24-for-49) from the floor in the contest including 7-of-20 from three and shot 67 percent at the foul line. It outscored the Hawks 17-to-10 in points off turnovers and 30-to-22 in points in the paint.
Enright matched his season-high with 22 points in the contest and tied his career-high with six three-pointers to lead all scorers.
Mayson Quartlebaum finished with 12 points while Prospere added 10 points.
Quincy was held to 35 percent (19-for-55) shooting in the contest including 6-of-21 from three and shot 65 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded the Tritons 34-to-30 and outscored them 16-12 in second chance points.
Richardson led the Hawks with 16 points while Isaiah Foster finished with 12 points.
UMSL begins its final road trip of the season next Thursday at Drury beginning at 7:45 p.m. at the O'Reilly Family Events Center in Springfield, Mo.
