UMSL Men’s Hoops Falls to Drury in Overtime

ST. LOUIS – In a game of runs it was Drury that had the last one as the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team fell to the Panthers 81-76 in overtime on Thursday evening in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at the O'Reilly Family Events Center in Springfield, Mo.

The Tritons drop to 10-14 including 8-8 in the GLVC while Drury improves to 13-10, 6-9 GLVC.

UMSL started the game hot scoring the game's first seven points and led 16-7 after a jumper from Mayson Quartlebaum 5:35 into the contest.

The Tritons hit 10 of their first 13 shots but after a slow start the Panthers heated up and knocked down 10 of its first 14 attempts.

UMSL led by four after a three-pointer from Savon Wykle but that would be its last lead of the frame as Drury scored 10 of the next 12 points to build a four-point lead after a jumper in the paint by Brock Wakefield.

The Tritons tied the game at 31 after a three from Terrell Kabala and a dunk by Troy Glover II with 4:31 left in the half. The Panthers regained the lead with a dunk from Juok Riak and a layup from Wakefield to regain its four-point lead.

UMSL drew within 37-36 after a three-point play from Quartlebaum but two Logan Applewhite free throws sent the teams to the locker room with Drury leading 39-36 at the break.

UMSL used an 18-9 run over a stretch of 5:30 to match its largest lead of the game at nine after a three-pointer from Matt Enright with 11:31 remaining.

The Panthers pulled to within 62-61 with 6:48 left after a layup from Riley Naeger but Emanuel Prospere II gave the Tritons a four-point cushion after a three-point play on the ensuing possession.
Drury cut it to one again hitting three of four free throws but were unable to tie the game.

Quartlebaum put UMSL back in front by four with his second three-point play of the night with 3:33 left.

Riak made it a one-point game with a three on the Panthers next possession. Glover had a chance to extend the lead to three but missed a dunk. Drury was unable to take advantage as Logan Applegate missed a three and the Tritons got the rebound.

A turnover gave the ball back to the Panthers and a foul sent Applegate to the line with 1:54 left in regulation. Applegate made the first to tie the game but missed the second.

UMSL got the rebound and had a chance to retake the lead but Quartlebaum missed a three and Drury go the rebound. The Panthers missed on their chance to retake the lead and the Tritons had a chance to break the tie but Enright missed a three and Wakefield got the rebound.

Drury held for the final shot but Riak's three from the top of the key was off the mark and the Tritons got the rebound but were unable to get off a final shot as the game went to overtime.

The two sides traded baskets over the first three minutes of the extra session and were still tied at 74 when Prospere scored a layup off an offensive rebound to put UMSL back in front. The lead was short lived as Applegate buried a trey to give the Panthers their first lead of overtime.

The Tritons got an open look at a three to answer but Prospere's shot rattled out and Naeger got the rebound.

Riak extend the Panther lead three with a layup with the shot clock winding down. UMSL had two chances around the basket to cut the lead to one but couldn't convert and Drury came away with the rebound.

The Tritons were forced to foul and sent Riak to the line who hit two free throws with :07 seconds left to seal the victory.

UMSL finished the contest shooting 48 percent (29-for-60) from the field including 7-of-21 from three and shot 85 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded Drury 32-to-28 but turned the ball over 16 times resulting in 14 points for the Panthers.

Enright and Quartlebaum led four Tritons in double figures with 17 points apiece while Prospere added 14 and Glover dropped in 11.

Drury shot 56 percent (31-for-55) from the floor in the game, was 6-of-23 from three and shot 77 percent at the foul line. Riak led all scorers with 24 points while Applegate had 17 and Wakefield finished with 10 point.

UMSL continues its three-game road trip on Saturday as it heads to Bolivar, Mo., to take on Southwest Baptist at 3 p.m. at the Meyer Sports Center. The Bearcats fell to McKendree 71-65 on Thursday.
