ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat Ferris State 13-11 in nine innings in its second game of the day on Saturday in the Independence Bank Blue Bridge Battle at Deaconess Park in Evansville, Ind. The Tritons dropped their first game to Davis & Elkins 2-1.
Game 2 – UMSL 13 Ferris State 11 9 innings
UMSL (4-3) jumped out to the early lead with a run in the top of the first. With two out,
Simia Spahiev singled down the right field line to drive in
Courtney Settles.
The Bulldogs (4-8) answered scoring five runs on five hits and an error in the home half of the second. Emma Gillard drove in Catherine O'Donohue with a ground out to second to tie the game. Keelin Wheaton made it 2-1 as she singled up the middle to bring in Emily Killion.
A throwing error allowed Wheaton to score the third run of the inning and Alexis Kozlowski capped the inning with a two-run single back up the middle.
The Tritons responded quickly scoring three times in the third.
McKenzie Lamos drove in
Maddie Snemis with a double to left center and
Jamie Widule brought home Settles and Lamos with a two-run double to center.
Ferris State added single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-4 lead into the sixth.
UMSL cut into the Bulldog lead as Lamos drove in her second run of the game with a single to left scoring Snemis.
Down to their final three outs the Tritons rallied in the seventh scoring three runs to take an 8-7 lead.
May Pasqualini scored on a passed ball with the bases loaded and
Maddie Illingworth followed with a singe up the middle to bring home Widule and Pasqualini.
FSU forced extra innings with a run in the last of the seventh as Wheaton drove in Killion.
UMSL scored three times in the top of the eighth to retake the lead.
Irene Travis drove in Lamos with a double to left. Travis scored on a throwing error by the first baseman on Spahiev's single and Pasqualini brought Spahiev home with a double to left center.
The Bulldogs answered with three runs in its half of the eighth. The tying runs scored on an error by Travis.
The Tritons retook the lead in the ninth. With one out, Lamos singled to short and Snemis scored from second on the play. Travis drove in Settles with an insurance run to make it 13-11.
Ferris State couldn't answer in the bottom of the ninth as
Ashley Borowitz got a ground out and two strikeouts to end the game.
UMSL outhit the Bulldogs 18-12 in the contest and were led by Snemis, Lamos, Travis and Spahiev with three hits apiece. Borowitz got the win pitching the final 1.2 innings giving up no runs on no hits and struck out four to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Game 1 – Davis & Elkins 2 UMSL 1
The Senators (7-5) jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the first four batters of the game. Alyssa Haynes drove in Sharon Morales with the first run and Lilly Saucedo brought home Haynes with a single to center.
UMSL had its chances but was unable to break through until the seventh. Widule led off the inning with a single to right and advanced all the way to third on an error by the right fielder. Settles drove in Widule with a single to cut the lead in half. The Tritons were unable to get the tying run across as a ground out, a strikeout and line out ended the contest.
UMSL outhit D&E 8-5 in the contest and was led by Settles with three while Widule added two. Borowitz was the tough luck loser giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out seven in the complete game effort.
The Tritons conclude play in the Independence Bank Blue Bridge Battle on Sunday taking on Northwood at 10 a.m. and Kentucky Wesleyan at noon.
