ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's tennis team picked up its first win of the spring season defeating Purdue Northwest 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the UMSL Tennis Courts.
The Tritons improve to 3-2 while the Pride fall to 5-8.
UMSL took the opening point by winning two of the three doubles matches. The duo of
Hannah Tse and
Anna Favaron beat Oona Kintscher and Daniela Rubio 6-3 at number two doubles while
Lauren Sweeney and
Aleksandra Lopez defeated Salma Raslan and Hayley Tsuen 6-1 in the third doubles contest.
Anna Domingo and
Maja Lietzau trailed Sienna Lopez and Regina Rioja 5-4 in the number one doubles match when the doubles point was clinched and went unfinished.
In singles action the Tritons won the first two singles matches to extend their lead to 3-0. Domingo led Lopez 2-1 in the opening set when Lopez retired. Lietzau dropped the opening set of her match against Rubio 6-3 but rallied to win the final two sets 6-4 and 10-7 in a tiebreak.
Purdue Northwest picked up its only point of the contest in the number three singles match as Kinstscher defeated Tse 6-1, 2-6, 10-7. UMSL clinched the match with a win at number four singles as Lopez defeated Rioja in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. The matches between Favaron and Raslan and Sweeney and Tsuen weren't finished.
The Tritons are back in action next Saturday (March 2) hosting Rockhurst at 11 a.m. at the UMSL Tennis Courts.
