UMSL Men’s Hoops Falls Victim to Bulldogs’ Hot Second Half

ST. LOUIS – It was a tale of two haves for the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team Saturday afternoon, but unfortunately for the Tritons, it was a strong second half of shooting by Truman State that allowed the host Bulldogs to come away with a 73-60 win at Pershing Arena.

UMSL falls to 8-13, 6-6 GLVC while Truman State improve to 9-11, 6-6 GLVC.

The first half was a game of runs as the Tritons scored the first nine points of the contest but the Bulldogs scored the next 11 to take a two-point lead with less than 12 minutes left in the opening half.

UMSL got a jumper from Matt Enright and two free throws from Mayson Quartlebaum to retake the lead but Truman answered with eight straight to build its largest lead of the half at 19-13 after three free throws from Landon Eiland.

The Tritons evened the score at 19 with back-to-back three's from Enright and Savon Wykle but the Bulldogs got back-to-back layups from Xavier Hall to retake the lead at 23-19 with 6:17 to play in the half.

UMSL outscored Truman 13-5 over the final six minutes to take a 32-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Tritons opened the second half scoring eight of the first 12 points to match its largest lead of the game at nine two and half minutes into the frame.

The Bulldogs took control from their outscoring UMSL 42-20 over the final 16-plus minutes to take the victory.

Truman was on fire from the floor in the second half connecting on 64 percent (16-for-25) from the field including 10-of-13 from three. The Tritons shot 50 percent from the floor in the stanza but was just 2-of-8 from downtown.

UMSL finished the game shooting an even 50 percent (21-for-42) but was 5-of-16 from three and shot 72 percent at the foul line. Quartlebaum finished with a game-high 20 points while Enright added 15 points and Emanuel Prospere II finished with 10 points.

The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 53 percent (26-for-49) including 14-of-25 from three and shot 78 percent at the charity stripe. Trey Shearer led four Truman players in double figures with 17 points while Blaise Porter had 13 points and Hall and Eiland finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.

The Tritons are back at home this Thursday (Feb. 8) hosting Illinois Springfield at 7:30 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
