ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team held off a late charge as Illinois Springfield missed a game-winning three-point shot in the final seconds to defeat the Prairie Stars 64-62 and snap a three-game losing streak on Thursday evening at the Mark Twain Building.
The Tritons improve to 9-13, 7-7 GLVC while UIS drops to 16-8, 9-5 GLVC.
UMSL led for over 33 minutes in the contest and were up by as many as 11 with 14:07 remaining in the game but the Prairie Stars fought back to tie the game six minutes later after a dunk from Isaiah Esker.
The Tritons got back-to-back baskets from
Emanuel Prospere II and
Matt Enright to stretch its lead to five but couldn't break from UIS as it tied the game at 60 on a jumper from Jordan Rice with 2:03 left.
Troy Glover II hit two free throws to put UMSL back in front at the 1:42 mark but Rice answered again with a jumper in the lane to tie the game at 62 with 90 seconds left.
UMSL missed a layup that would've given them the lead back but the Prairie Stars couldn't take advantage as Rice slipped on his way to the basket and Enright came away with a steal with 0:42 left.
The Tritons got the ball inside to Glover on their next possession and he hit what proved to be the game-winning shot with 0:21 remaining.
Rice again had a chance to tie the game but Glover came up with a huge block and
Mayson Quartlebaum got the rebound and was fouled with 10.9 seconds to play.
Quartlebaum missed the front end of a one-and-one as Jacob Hanna got the rebound.
UIS pushed the ball up the floor and found Rice on the left wing for an open look from three but his shot went halfway down and popped out. Glover secured the rebound and UMSL was able to run out the clock.
UMSL shot 46 percent (24-for-52) from the field in the contest but was 4-of-12 from three and shot 63 percent at the foul line. It forced 12 Prairie Star turnovers and converted those into 17 points. Glover lead the way for the Tritons with 20 points and nine rebounds while
Savon Wykle finished with 17 points. Prospere and Enright added 12 and 10 points respectively.
UMSL's defense held UIS to 42 percent (22-for-52) shooting in the contest including 2-of-15 from three and 80 percent at the foul line. Hanna led four Prairie Stars in double figures with 18 points while Rice, Esker and Jack Weber had 13 points each.
The Tritons conclude their homestand against Quincy on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
