ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's tennis team came up short in its match against No. 17 Northwest Missouri State 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Genesis Indoor Courts in St. Joseph, Mo. The Tritons drop to 2-2 while the Bearcats win their first dual match of the season.
NWMSU won the first two doubles matches to take the opening point of the match. The number three doubles team of Marielena Muench and Laura Prieto Sierio beat
Lauren Sweeney and
Anna Favaron 6-1. In the second doubles contest it was Tessa Kwakernaak and Angela per Moreno beating
Anna Domingo and
Aleksandra Lopez 6-4. The number one doubles match between
Maja Lietzau and
Hannah Tse were tied at 4 in their match against Sofia Pignataro and Carolina DeOliveira when the doubles match was called.
In singles play, Domingo dropped the first set to DeOliveira 6-4 but came back to win the next two sets 6-2 and 10-7 in a tiebreak. Lietzau dropped the second singles match to Kwakernaak 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, Tse won the opening set of her match against Pignataro 6-3 before dropping the next two 6-4 and 12-10 in the third set tiebreak.
Lopez fell to Muench 6-4, 6-0, Favaron lost to Prieto Sierio 6-3, 6-4 and the final singles match between Sweeney and per Moreno went unfinished with per Moreno up 5-0 when the match was clinched.
UMSL returns to the courts on Sunday (Feb. 25) when it hosts Purdue Northwest.
