ST. LOUIS – History was made on Wednesday evening as
Justice Beard gave the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's swimming program its first Great Lakes Valley Conference championship winning the 1,000-yard freestyle. She joins former men's swimmer Diogo Dias who won the 100-yard backstroke at the 2016 GLVC Championship meet as the only Tritons to win a conference championship.
As a group, UMSL set three school records on the second day of the conference meet at the Deaconess Aquatic Center in Evansville, Ind.
Beard won the race in a personal best and school record time of 10:03.17 besting her entry time by 13.04 seconds and improving her NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the event. She won the race by 2.22 seconds over Indianapolis' Brynhildur Traustadottir.
The Triton 200-yard medley relay squad of
Ella Lantz,
Zara Konstapel,
Audrey Lantz and
Kate Nelson finished third in the event in a school record time of 1:42.26 which broke their own record they set back in November by a second. UMSL's second team of
Brooklyn Messenger,
Cheyanne Godleski,
Callie Clinton and
Madison Bottorff came in 14th overall in a time of 1:48.33.
Rebecca Bechtel and
Isabella Gruidl finished 10th and 15th overall in the 1,000 free with times of 10:35.39 and 10:47.12 respectively. Konstapel and Godleski were 16th and 24th in the 200-yard individual medley. Konstapel touched the wall at 2:12.09 and Godleski came in at 2:16.02.
UMSL had four swimmers score points in the 50 free led by A. Lantz who finished third in the B final in a time of 23.75 while
Ava Boehning was tied for sixth in the B final at 23.95. Nelson and
Kelsey Roth swam in the C final with Nelson turning in a time of 23.98 while Roth touched the wall at 24.46.
Drury's women hold the lead in the team scores after day two with 513 points. UMSL moved up to fifth place with 253 points and is seven points behind Lewis for fourth.
On the men's side,
Hendrik Bechtel finished eighth in the 1,000-freestyle with a personal best and school record time of 9:20.99. His time was less than a second faster than the previous school record and improved his NCAA provisional qualifying time in the event.
Also picking up points in the 1,000 free were
Mason Stimson and
Carson Ring finishing 18th and 21st overall with times of 9:43.81 and 9:53.51 respectively.
Conley Savage and
Aaron Wicklund competed in the B final of the 200-yard individual medley. Savage finished third in the heat at 1:49.34 while Wicklund was seventh coming in at 1:51.32.
Guillem Masjuan Roca swam in the C final of the 200 IM finishing with a time of 1:51.68.
David Reynolds competed in the C final of the 50-yard freestyle finishing fifth in his heat in a time of 20.57 seconds.
The Triton 200-yard medley relay team of Masjuan Roca,
Elliot LaBeau, Savage and Reynolds took seventh overall in the event with a time of 1:30.09 while the squad of
Ryan Conner,
Dylan Bonnett,
Ethan Boehle and Stimson
finished 16th overall at 1:32.32.
UIndy's men lead the way in the team standings after the second day with 460 points. UMSL is in sixth place with 203 points.
Thursday's competition will feature the 100-yard butterfly, 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle and the 400-yard medley relay. There will be preliminary rounds in the morning for the 100-fly, 400-IM and 200-free while the 400-medley relay will be straight finals.
