ST. LOUIS – Alex Wolff recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and was one of five University of Missouri-St. Louis players to reach double figures in the Tritons 71-53 win over Illinois Springfield on Thursday evening at the Mark Twain Building.
The win is the second straight for UMSL as its record improves to 10-12, 8-8 GLVC while the Prairie Stars drop to 12-10, 10-6 GLVC.
The Tritons trailed early in the contest after a three-pointer from Liz Uhl gave UIS an early 3-2 lead but that would be its only lead of the contest as UMSL ran off eight straight points as Wolff and
Morgan Ramthun had four points apiece in that run.
The Prairie Stars pulled to within 10-8 after Jessenia Lawson scored a layup on the break before the Tritons scored the next seven to take its largest lead of the quarter at 17-8 on a jumper by
Amaya Blake with 0:42 left in the opening stanza.
UIS got two free throws from Shariah Gailes in the closing seconds of the frame to cut the lead to seven heading into the second quarter.
UMSL began the second stanza on an 8-2 run to build its largest lead of the half at 25-12 after a layup from Ramthun with less than four minutes to go until halftime.
The Prairie Stars made a late run to pull within five with 0:31 left in the half but
Emerson Weller sank two free throws with 2.5 seconds left to give the Tritons a seven-point lead the break.
UIS pulled to within five a couple of times in the third frame but UMSL wouldn't let them get closer outscoring the Prairie Stars 12-5 over the final four-plus minutes of the stanza to take a 49-37 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
The Triton lead never dipped below double digits in the final quarter as they led by as many as 20 before settling for the 18-point victory.
UMSL shot 45 percent (24-for-53) from the field in the contest, was 1-of-5 from three, shot 79 percent from the foul line and outrebounded UIS 51-to-36 for the game. Wolff, Weller and Ramthun were tied for the game-high in scoring while Blake and
Mara Rieder added 12 and 10 points apiece.
The Triton defense held the Prairie Stars to a season-low shooting performance as they were 19-for-71 (26.8 percent) from the floor including 6-of-26 from three and shot 56 percent at the foul line. UIS turned 17 UMSL turnovers into 22 points but the Tritons had the advantage in the paint outscoring them 40-22.
Uhl led the Prairie Stars with 13 points while Amaya Asher added 10 points off the bench.
UMSL concludes its homestand against Quincy on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
