Tritons Drop Series Opener to Flyers

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team dropped its series opener to Lewis 13-6 on Friday afternoon at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo. The Tritons drop to 9-9, 1-4 GLVC while the Flyers improve to 8-8, 3-2 GLVC.

Lewis jumped all over UMSL starter RJ Elmore sending 11 batters to the plate in the first inning scoring six runs on eight hits. Chris McDevitt drove in two of those runs with a single through the right side of the infield with the bases loaded to make it 3-0.

The Flyers added two more in the second on Jason Krol's two-run triple to left center.

The Tritons got on the board in their half of the second as Garrett Strenger scored from third on a throwing error by Michael Sclafani on a failed pickoff attempt at first.

Lewis extended its lead to 10 in third with three runs on three hits. McDevitt drove in two more runs with a single through the right side.

UMSL put up a four spot in the fifth as Barrett Rose brought home Justin Simard and Dane Stevenson with a double down the right field line. Later in the inning, Strenger hit a two-out single to center scoring Rose and Braedon Stoakes.

The Tritons got another run in the seventh as Logan McIntyre doubled to right center scoring Rose. Strenger tried to score from first on the play but a perfect relay throw got him at the plate.

The Flyers final two runs came in the ninth. Mikey Kocen doubled home Thomas Fox and McDevitt drove in Kocen with a single to center for his fifth RBI of the contest.

UMSL finished with 10 hits in the contest and was led by Stoakes, Rose, Strenger and Jake Isaacs with two apiece. Elmore took the loss giving up 11 runs on 14 hits with a pair of strikeouts in 3.0 innings pitched to drop to 1-3 on the season.

The Tritons and Lewis continue their four-game series with a doubleheader starting at noon at the UMSL Baseball Field on Saturday.
