ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team extend its winning streak to five with a doubleheader sweep of Truman State on Friday afternoon at TSU Baseball Park in Kirksville, Mo. The Tritons won the first game 8-2 and the nightcap 6-0.
Game 1 – UMSL 8 Truman 2
UMSL (14-9, 6-4 GLVC) jumped on top early in game loading the bases with no out on three consecutive singles in the first. After a strikeout,
Andrew Buescher brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly to center scoring
Dane Stevenson.
Mitchell Green made it 2-0 with a single through the left side of the infield that scored
Braedon Stoakes.
The Tritons extended their lead to 3-0 in the second as Stevenson drove in
Justin Simard with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Bulldogs (7-17, 4-6 GLVC) got a run back in their half of the second on Oliver Degenhardt's solo home run to left with one out in the frame.
UMSL got that run back in the fourth as Simard drove in the first of his six RBI in the doubleheader with a single up the middle bringing home Green.
Truman made it a two-run game in the fifth as Dylan Thompson hit a double to right center scoring Tal Dean.
The Tritons regained their three-run lead in the sixth. Green led off the inning with a single to left, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Bryce Kulinski, went to third on a ground out to first and scored on Simard's bunt single.
The Bulldogs brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the seventh but
RJ Elmore got a pop out to short and a lineout to left to end the threat.
UMSL sealed the victory with a three spot in the eighth as Simard hit a three-run double to left center.
The Tritons outhit Truman 16-9 in the opener and were led by Stoakes with four while Green and Simard had three apiece. Elmore went the distance allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out seven to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Game 2 – UMSL 6 Truman 0
UMSL took advantage of wildness from Bulldog starting pitcher Ty Rauser scoring six runs on two hits, four walks and five wild pitches in the second inning.
Garrett Strenger drove in
Logan McIntyre with a groundout to second for the first run of the contest. Later in the inning Simard singled to right scoring
Zach Beatty. A wild pitch allowed
Jake Isaacs to score the third run. Stoakes made it 4-0 with a single through the left side of the infield. Stevenson and Stoakes each scored on wild pitches to cap the scoring.
Truman's best chance to score came in the second but
Zach Haygood kept them off the scoreboard by getting a lineout to first and a ground out to second to end the frame.
The Tritons finished with three hits in the nightcap with Simard recording a pair while Stoakes added the final one. Haygood picked up the complete game shutout allowing seven hits while striking out five to improve to 3-0 on the season.
UMSL and the Bulldogs wrap up their four-game series with another doubleheader on Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m.
