ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team snapped its own five-game winning streak and No. 5 UIndy's 20-game winning streak with a 3-2 win in game one of its doubleheader on Friday afternoon at the UMSL Softball Field. The Greyhounds took game two 13-2 in five innings.
Game 1 – UMSL 3 UIndy 2
The opening game was a pitcher's duel between UIndy's Kenzee Smith and UMSL's
Ashley Borowitz as both pitchers escaped jams in the first two innings.
The Tritons (17-17, 4-4 GLVC) broke through against Smith in the home half of the third.
Maddie Snemis reached on a throwing error by the shortstop to open the inning and then
McKenzie Lamos and
Irene Travis followed with singles to load the bases with no one out.
Smith got
Jamie Widule and
Courtney Settles to hit into force outs for the first two outs of the frame but then issued three straight walks to
Gwyn Miller,
Katie Schaake and
May Pasqualini to take a 3-0 lead.
The Greyhounds (30-3, 9-1 GLVC) cut UMSL's lead to one in the fifth. Megan Nichols led off the inning with a double to left and scored on Emily O'Connor's two-run homer to center. Borowitz struck out the next two Hounds but surrendered a two-out double to Lexy Rees. Borowitz got out of the inning by retiring Shelby Cook on a foul out to Lamos at third.
UIndy got the tying run on base with two out in the seventh but Borowitz got Braxton Downs to ground into a fielder's choice at second to end the game.
The Tritons finished with five hits in the opener and were led by Travis with two while Lamos, Settles and
Megan Russell had one each. Borowitz won the duel against Smith as she struck out a career-high 12 hitters and walked two to even her record at 9-9.
Game 2 – UIndy 13 UMSL 2 5 innings
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first of the nightcap on Rees' grand slam to center.
UMSL got a run back in its half of the first as Settles hit a two-out double to left center to bring home Snemis.
UIndy extended its lead with six runs in the second highlighted by Rees' second grand slam in as many as bats. The Hounds got a solo home run from Nichols in the fourth and then Nichols hit a two-run home run in the fifth.
The Tritons final run came in the fifth as Lamos singled to right center scoring Pasqualini.
UMSL finished with seven hits in the second game and was led by Settles and Pasqualini with two apiece. Schaake got the start in the circle and took the loss to fall to 4-3 on the season.
The Tritons wrap up their six-game homestand against Lewis in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at noon at the UMSL Softball Field.
