ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Lewis 11-1 and 11-2 in five innings at the UMSL Softball Field on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons drop to 17-19, 4-6 GLVC while the Flyers improve to 26-7, 11-1 GLVC.
Game 1 – Lewis 11 UMSL 1
The opening game was scoreless through three innings and then Lewis scored three runs on four hits and an error in the fourth. Evie Calderon hit a two-run single to left scoring Jalyn Powell and Meghan Bontrager. Calderon advanced to second on a misplay in left. Payton Wuske made it 3-0 with a single to right.
The Flyers sent 10 batters to the dish in the fifth scoring five runs on four hits and three errors. Powell and Wuske each had two run singles in the frame.
UMSL extended the game with a run in its half of the fifth. With two away,
May Pasqualini singled to first and scored on
Irene Travis' double down the right field line.
Lewis added three more in the seventh highlighted by Gabi Nilles double to right center.
The Tritons were held to seven hits in the contest and were led by Travis with two.
Ashley Borowitz was the tough luck loser giving up eight runs, two earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts to fall to 9-10.
Game 2 – Lewis 11 UMSL 2
The Flyers opened the scoring in the second game getting back-to-back home runs from Powell and Anna Frafjord with two out in the first. Lewis added two more in the second on Delaney Garden's single up the middle that scored Nilles and Calderon.
The Flyers batted around in the third inning sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs on three hits and an error. The inning was highlighted by Erica Hoffman's three-run inside the park home run to right.
UMSL got a run back in its half of the third. With runners at second and third,
Courtney Settles lined a single off the shortstop's glove scoring
Rebecca Littrel.
The Tritons final run came in the fifth on Travis' single to right scoring Pasqualini.
UMSL had seven hits in game two and were led by Pasqualini and Travis with two apiece.
The Tritons return to the diamond next Saturday as they head down to Rolla to take on Missouri S&T in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at the S&T Softball Field.
