UMSL Softball Drops Pair to Miners

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader at Missouri S&T by identical 2-1 scores on Saturday afternoon at the S&T Softball Field in Rolla, Mo. The Tritons fall to 17-21 (4-8 GLVC) while the Miners improve to 18-20, 9-5 GLVC).

Game 1 – S&T 2 UMSL 1
UMSL jumped on top with a run in the third inning. With one out, May Pasqualini singled to short and with two out stole second and scored on Courtney Settles' single to center.

S&T tied and took the lead with two runs in the fifth. With two out Baylee Jobson walked, stole second and scored on Trista Grobe's single to right center. Elizabeth Viox followed with a single and then Bryn Wooldridge reached on a fielding error that allowed Grobe to score the go-ahead run.

The Tritons got the tying run on base in the seventh courtesy of a two-out single from Megan Russell but couldn't bring her around as a pop out to short ended the game.

UMSL had five hits in the first game and was led by Settles and Russell with two apiece. Ashley Borowitz was the tough luck loser in the pitcher's duel giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits with six punch outs to fall to 9-11 on the season.

Game 2 – S&T 2 UMSL 1
S&T struck first in the backend of the doubleheader with an unearned run in the first. With one out, Viox reached on an error and scored on Wooldridge's single to right center.

The Tritons tied the game in the third. Katie Schaake walked to start the frame. Jamie Widule reached on a bunt single and a throwing error allowed Schaake to advance to third. Widule stole second to put two in scoring position for Pasqualini. Pasqualini drove in the tying run with a fielder's choice as Schaake scored on the play.

UMSL had a chance to take the lead as Pasqualini stole second to put two in scoring position with no out but the Tritons were unable to push the runs across.

The Miners retook the lead in the sixth. Wooldridge led off the inning with a double to left and scored on Ty Neal's one out single up the middle.

The Tritons had a chance to take the lead in the seventh. With one out, Settles walked and then with two out Irene Travis doubled to left. Simia Spahiev hit it hard but lined out to short to end the game.

UMSL finished with six hits in the second game and was led by Spahiev with three while Widule, Pasqualini and Travis had one apiece. Lexi Sherrick took the loss in the nightcap giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and got 12 outs on the ground but fell to 4-6 on the year.
