ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team upset fifth ranked Grand Valley State 4-3 in its second game of the day on Friday in The Spring Games at the Auburndale Softball Complex in Winter Haven, Fla. The Tritons dropped their first game of the day to Trevecca Nazarene 8-0 in six innings.
Game 2 – UMSL 4 Grand Valley State 3
The Lakers (15-4) jumped on top with two runs in the top of the first. Hannah Hollister reached on an error to start the game and scored on Morgan Spicer's triple to right. With one out, Jenna Ballard drove in Spicer with a sacrifice fly to center.
UMSL (10-10) tied the game in the second as
Maddie Snemis drove in
May Pasqualini and
Jamie Widule with a two-out single back up the middle. Snemis was thrown out at second to end the inning trying to stretch her single into a double.
Grand Valley retook the lead in the third as Hollister scored on a wild pitch.
The Tritons answered back in their half of the third. Widule drove in
Courtney Settles with a sacrifice fly to right and
Gwyn Miller brought home
Rylie Buchanan with the go-ahead run on a double down the left field line.
The Lakers had the tying run in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but was unable to bring them home. Grand Valley had one more chance in the seventh as Kelsey Komorous reached on a two-out error but
Katie Schaake retired Ballard a on a pop out back to her to end the game.
The win snapped the Lakers 12-game winning streak.
UMSL finished with eight hits in the contest and was led by Snemis and
Irene Travis with two apiece while Settles, Widule, Miller and Pasqualini had one hit each. Schaake went the distance giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out three to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Game 1 – Trevecca Nazarene 8 UMSL 0 6 innings
The Tritons were unable to solve the Trojans (15-8) Ashlan Sensing as Sensing threw a six-inning perfect game with eight strikeouts and eight ground outs.
TNU scored four in the third, added two more in the fourth and sealed the win with its final two runs coming in the sixth. Kendall Andrews went 3-for-3 in the contest for the Trojans with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored. Anna Bennett also scored twice for TNU.
Ashley Borowitz took the loss giving up six runs, four earned, on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts to see her record even at 6-6.
UMSL returns to the diamond on Sunday afternoon taking on Indiana (Pa.) at 2 p.m. (CDT) followed by a contest against Wayne State (Mich.) at 4:15 p.m. (CDT). Both games will be played at the Diamondplex Softball Complex in Winter Haven, Fla.
