ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team overcame a late four-run deficit to defeat Southwest Baptist 12-10 in 10 innings on Friday evening at Dodson Field in Bolivar, Mo. The Tritons improve to 21-13, 13-8 GLVC while the Bearcats drop to 9-26, 6-15 GLVC.
SBU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a three-run homer from Sal Jacobo with one out in the bottom of the first.
UMSL got one of those runs back in the second as
Andrew Buescher led off the inning with a home run to right center.
The Bearcats regained their three-run cushion in the home half of the second as Zeke Skinner reached on a fielder's choice to short scoring Ayden Fetters.
The Tritons got a two-out, two-run single from
Braedon Stoakes that scored
Dane Stevenson and
Jake Isaacs to make it a one run contest in the fifth. UMSL tied the game in the sixth on
Barrett Rose's solo home run to right center.
SBU regained the lead in its half of the sixth scoring four runs on three hits. Dean Hagenhoff put the Bearcats back in front with an RBI single to left scoring Fetters. After a pitching change, Skinner hit a three-run homer to left center to extend the lead to 8-4.
UMSL rallied in the seventh.
Zach Beatty led off the inning with a walk and Isaacs followed with a bunt single. A throwing error allowed the runners to advance to second and third. With one out, Stoakes tripled to center pulling the Tritons within 8-6. Rose reached on an error by the third baseman which allowed Stoakes to score. A throwing error by the third baseman allowed Rose to get into scoring position.
Garrett Strenger tied the game with a two-out single to right bringing home Rose.
SBU regained the lead in its half of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Tellez reached on a bunt single to bring home Raydley Legito. Hagenhoff reached on an error by Rose that brought in Cayden Shaver.
UMSL fought back once again loading the bases with two out in the eighth. Buescher came through hitting a two-run single down the right field line bringing home Stevenson and Beatty with the tying runs.
Trent Anderson pitched two scoreless innings to force the extra frame.
Buescher came through in the clutch again in the 10th hitting a double down the left field line scoring Stevenson and Rose with the go-ahead runs.
Anderson slammed the door shut getting two strikeouts and a flyout to right to earn his third win of the season.
The Tritons outhit the Bearcats 13-11 in the contest and were led by Buescher with four hits while Stoakes and Isaacs added three apiece. Buescher finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in five runs in the contest. Anderson struck out five of the nine hitters he faced in his three innings of work.
UMSL and SBU continue its four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. at Dodson Field.
